Larry Eugene Harpman

Larry Eugene Harpman, a cherished husband, father, and friend, passed away on January 12, 2026. Born on January 12, 1962, in Galesburg, Illinois, Larry was the son of Gene and Chris Harpman. He spent his childhood exploring the rural communities on the western side of Illinois, where he developed the values and spirit that defined his life.

Larry was recognized for his remarkable athletic ability and his fierce competitive drive. Sports were not just a pastime for Larry-they were a lifelong passion. He played, coached, and cheered with unwavering intensity, always believing that his enthusiasm alone might influence the outcome of the game. Larry's commitment to athletics extended into his career and personal life, shaping the many relationships he built along the way.

He served proudly in the United States Army, which afforded him the opportunity to travel and see the world, including memorable postings in South Korea and Honduras. After his service, Larry pursued higher education, earning a degree in physical education from Western Illinois University. He went on to dedicate much of his career to teaching, coaching, and mentoring students and athletes, leaving a lasting impact on all who learned from him.

Larry's adventurous spirit drew him to the mountains and wilderness, where he accomplished the impressive feat of climbing 11 of Colorado's Fourteeners. Music was another central part of Larry's life-his unwavering devotion to live performances, and song lyrics made music his personal sanctuary. He was happiest on the road to a concert, eagerly waiting in line for tickets, or spending time with musicians and fellow fans.

Throughout his life, Larry faced challenges, but he never lost his sense of humor, adventurous outlook, or his unique ability to connect with others. He was quick to smile, and the sparkle in his bright blue eyes always revealed his playful, mischievous side. Larry's children aim to honor his memory by carrying forward the best aspects of who he was.

Later in life, Larry met his best friend and partner, Valerie. They married on February 29th, a date Larry chose for its practicality and romantic charm, as it meant he only had to remember their anniversary every four years. Their twelve years together were filled with partnership, laughter, and a shared belief in not taking life too seriously.

Valerie loved Larry completely, embracing both his stubbornness and his questionable fashion sense.

Larry was truly larger than life and a hero to many. His charm, confidence, and storytelling were legendary, embellished only occasionally. A true diamond in the rough, Larry was deeply human, fearlessly bold, and loved without reservation. His family finds comfort in imagining him reunited with his favorite musicians, finally at peace and perhaps still trying to secure the perfect setlist. May your soul shine on, Larry.

Larry is survived by his wife, Valerie; their dog, Tiny; his two adult children, Troy Harpman and Angeline (Alex) Mather; as well as an uncle, cousins, nieces, a nephew, several grandchildren, a great nephew, and a great niece. He was preceded in death by his parents and an older sister.
