Ann Z. Melvin

Ann Melvin passed away peacefully on the evening of Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the age of 94. She died at Davis Hospice Center, having been surrounded by friends who gathered throughout the day to pray for her and with her. She returned to her Creator shortly before 10:00 p.m., sustained by faith and friendship.

Ann’s life began and ended in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but the years in between carried her across continents. She was born on October 2, 1931, at Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne, the daughter of Dr. Samuel and Mrs. Ruth (Shanfield) Zuckerman. Baptized into the Roman Catholic Church, (St. Mary’s cathedral Cheyenne) the faith of her Irish Catholic mother, she remained rooted in Cheyenne even as her curiosity led her far beyond it.

From an early age, Ann was adventurous. Her studies took her to Paris, where she lived, studied, and taught English to French students—no small achievement for a young woman of her time. She and her mother traveled extensively throughout Europe, igniting in Ann a lifelong passion for exploring cultures, meeting new people, and learning through conversation and reading. She believed that travel was not simply movement, but encounter.

Her global curiosity also led her to serve with the Peace Corps in the Ivory Coast, where she worked as a guide and instructor. That experience deepened her appreciation for cultures different from her own and reflected her desire to contribute meaningfully wherever she lived.

Eventually, Ann returned to Cheyenne to care for her mother, embodying the same devotion she showed in friendship and service.

An avid golfer well into her 80s and a lifelong bridge player, Ann thrived on community. Before and even during the years surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, she organized coffee discussion groups that gathered regularly to explore topics ranging from theology and history to world events. She read widely and thoughtfully, and she counted priests, theologians, and historians among her friends, sharing with them a mutual respect and intellectual camaraderie.

Faith was central to her identity. Though Catholic by baptism, she also cherished her Jewish heritage and often said she considered herself both. Even in her 90s, she studied the Old and New Testaments with seriousness and devotion. She served for many years as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and as a pastoral minister, bringing the Eucharist to the sick and homebound and offering prayer and companionship. Even when her own health declined, she continued to reach out to others with compassion.

Ann was proud to be, for a time, the oldest active parishioner of the Cathedral of St. Mary, where she was baptized by Father Hartman in 1931. She was a longtime member of the Bishop’s Guild and of St. Rose’s Circle, which cares for the Cathedral.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Ross Zuckerman. She leaves behind a wide circle of devoted friends whose lives were enriched by her wisdom, curiosity, and enduring friendship.

She found joy in her beloved cats—Ebony and Crooked in earlier years, and later Beau—who were treasured companions.

Ann will be remembered for her intellect, independence, deep faith, and expansive heart.

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Cheyenne on Thursday, March 19 at 10AM, followed by a reception at Little America. The vigil will be held at Schrader’s funeral home in Cheyenne on Wednesday, March 18 at 6:30PM.
