Wake Forest, NC, passed away on March 1, 2026. Born on November 3, 1970, Leigh's life was a testament to her unwavering kindness, her infectious humor, and her profound commitment to helping others.
Leigh's journey began in Youngsville, where she was born to the late Martha Wilson Brown Smith and Kenneth Eugene Brown. Her early years in the Wake and Franklin County areas shaped her into the compassionate and community-oriented person she would become. Leigh's laughter and love filled the homes she made with her beloved husband.
Leigh's professional life was marked by her dedication to the State of North Carolina, where she was set to retire on April 1, 2026. Her passion for her work was evident to all who knew her, especially in her role at the Lenovo Center, which she began in 2023 and planned to continue post-retirement. Leigh's commitment to her career was paralleled only by her devotion to her family, including her sisters, Sharron Champion and Dana Wade, who will carry her memory forward.
Leigh's legacy of love and service lives on through her family and the countless lives she touched. Leigh's work with Medicaid was not just a job; it was her calling. She poured her heart into ensuring that clients received the benefits they deserved, often working 10-12 hours a day to make a difference in their lives.
She is survived by her loving husband, James Edward Melvin II; sons, Joshua O. Melvin and Nikolas K. Melvin; and sisters, Sharron Champion and Dana Wade.
Those who knew Leigh will remember her as the embodiment of love and kindness. Her sense of humor brought joy to every gathering, and her presence was a source of comfort and strength.
