MAMOU – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Larry Hollier beginning at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Mamou, La.  Father Billy Massie will preside over the service as the celebrant.  Interment will be conducted at New St. Ann’s Mausoleum.

Larry Hollier was born in Lanse Meg, Louisiana to Leonard Hollier and Lula Pierrotti-Hollier on December 20, 1936. He transitioned on November 23, 2023, at the age of 86.

Larry was a devout man who attended St. Ann's Catholic Church. He was a private philanthropist within his church, his community, and many organizations he held dear.

Larry graduated from Mamou High School; Class of 1955. He was a well-decorated high school athlete and active booster to his alma mater. He enjoyed watching his nephews, nieces and their children participate in all Mamou High athletic events.

Larry was a career Army Veteran. He earned numerous awards and served in the 121st Medical Evacuation Hospital - US Army - Korean War. After a twenty-year military career, he retired and began a second career while attending Southern University. He obtained further education in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics. For over twenty years, he practiced as an Orthotist and Prosthetist while owning and operating “Hollier's Custom Shoes and Orthotics” where “Happy Feet Make Happy People” was his motto. Larry helped many disabled individuals across the country throughout his two careers.

In his pastime, Larry wrote articles about hunting, fishing, camping, local athletics, and traveling. He wrote weekly articles for the Ville Platte Gazette, Mamou Acadian Press, and The Daily World. Larry was also published in the national skeet magazine “Skeet Review”. His newspaper publications later became a weekly sportsman’s spot on the local KVPI radio station. In addition, he was known for breeding and training champion Labrador Retrievers, and award-winning wildlife photography.

As an avid skeet shooter, a life member of the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association (LSSA), and the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA), Larry received numerous trophies and awards for his skills in all gauges of the sport. In 2001, Larry was inducted into the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame. For 40 years, he and Betty loved the travels that took them from coast to coast and around the world shooting those little orange clay targets.

Among his many accomplishments, Larry holds Hall of Fame spots in the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association (LSSA) Hall of Fame, the Louisiana High School Boxing Hall of Fame in Plaquemine, LA, and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Left behind to mourn his loss are his three daughters, Roxanne Roessler (Husband, Herman) of Westlake; Lauren Hollier-Perkins of Mamou (Companion, Matt); Daphne Bihm (Husband, Wayne) of Baton Rouge; two grandchildren, Ashlyn Zartler (Husband, Eric) of Moss Bluff, and Seth Fontenot (Wife, Nikki) of Iota, LA; two step-grandsons, Frederick and Carlton Roessler of Westlake; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Castete and Kaitlyn Fontenot, and step great-grandchildren.

Larry also leaves behind one brother and two sisters, Loretta Hollier of Ville Platte; Bobby Hollier (Wife, Sarah) of West Monroe; Ramona Yarborough (Husband, Bob) of Carencro; Leola Hollier of Mamou and Carolyn “Lyn” Schaeffer-Hollier of West Monroe along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years Betty Deshotels-Hollier, his father Leonard Hollier, his mother Lula Pierrotti-Hollier, his baby brother Hollier, his brother Rinal Hollier, his father-in-law Lester Deshotels, Sr., and mother-in-law Yolanda Gotro-Deshotels.

Larry’s family would also like to thank dear classmates, friends, ARMY confidants Oliver Hunter and Russell Wolfe, and caretaker/confidant of 6 years, Dianne Jack.

Thank you to the hospital staff and therapists for going above and beyond over the years. Trey Prudhomme, Nurse Laurie, Nurse Lisa, Nurse Hunter, Nurse Shavanda, Nurse Belisha, Ms. Donna, the CNA’s of Hall 300, and the entire Heritage Manor staff. Thank you for your compassion and care for my father. Thank you to the Opelousas General Hospital, Guardian Hospice Care, Mr. Shane Voorhies with the VA in Alexandria, and Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Mamou.

These individuals listened, shared tears, and gave him the best personal care. We appreciate each one of you.

At request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home of Mamou on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, beginning at 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Rosary being recited at 6:30 PM. Visitation will resume on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM.
