Larry Hudson Obituary

Mr. Larry Nelson Hudson, 86, of Douglasville, Georgia, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Tranquility Hospice. He was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia on November 20, 1939 to the late Eula Bell Silvers Tuck and Nelson Tuck and was then adopted and raised by the late Maude and John Hudson.

Larry was a firefighter and EMT for 23 years in Gwinnett County - he was known for his heart of gold and generous nature. He loved helping others - he was able to serve his community by becoming a Freemason and also the President of the Lawrenceville JC's in his younger days. Larry was a loving, generous and honest man who enjoyed simple pleasures in life such as attending church at First Presbyterian in Douglasville, travelling the coast with his beloved wife, and going fishing.

Larry leaves behind a legacy of kindness and happiness that will never be forgotten by those who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Grace McGaughey; sister-in-law, Sulane Perry; brother, Woody Hudson; and brother-in-law, Charles Stone.

He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Mrs. Sonyanna Stone Hudson; daughter, Dawn (Jeff) Brooks; son, Darren (Tina) Hudson; grandchildren, Autumn Brooks, Courtney Brooks, Chase Hudson and Drew Hudson; great granddaughter, Kaysen Mayweather; nieces, Vickey (Dan) Bailey and Cindy Marrette; nephews, Harry McGaughey and Steve McGaughey; and beloved neighbor, Dawn Kelley.

In accordance with his wishes, Captain Larry was cremated.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Larry drove a bus for Gwinnett Extension 4-H youth for many years. We always enjoyed him as a bus driver and he was always on time and safe. We appreciated his friendship and proud he was part of our team.

Years ago, Larry and I were like brothers. Larry actually helped me get my first job in 1960, when jobs were hard to get. We then worked at the same company for 10 years. When that company closed we went separate ways for a few years. A few years later we got back together when Larry was selling insurance. He sold me some!
Then Larry became a firefighter. It fit him perfectly. Larry began to work with Marie and me. He was there when our son got his arm caught in one of our large presses. Larry used his training to take charge of the situation and prevented further damage to our son's arm.
Larry and I bought a sailboat and we spent many days, evenings, and weekends on it. We even sailed it in winter storm when freezing rain and sleet was falling.
Those were the fun years! We were so excited when Larry got his Captain's license. Larry was so full of pride, and he deserved it.
Larry would always help anyone. He was at his happiest in those days when he was helping someone.
Larry will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. Our deepest sympathies go to Sonyanna, Dawn, Darren, and family.
Fair Winds and Following Seas, old friend.
