Larry Mayo James, age 90, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully at Bowyer’s Hospice House on Wednesday, February 18th 2026. He was born on August 1st, 1935, in Page, WV

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Alpha James; his twin brother, Jerry James; his sister-in-law, Mildred James; and his nephew, Joe James.

He is survived by his son, Larry James Jr.; his sister, Margaret Ann (Dewey) Atkins; his nieces, Sandra James, Sue James, and Eve Walraven; his nephew Jimmy (Mary) Crouse; his great-nephews, Scott (Alicia) James (children: Alivia, Xoe and Brayden), and Joseph James (children: Brodie, Landrie and Ryden); his great-niece, Kelli (Jayme) Persinger; three very special great-great-nephews, Connor, Grayson, and Sawyer, several other extended nieces and nephews and a close family friend and caregiver Shelia Holbrook.

Larry proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After his service, he built a life rooted in hard work, family, and the outdoors. An avid hunter, Larry’s true passion was fishing. He knew all the best spots, exactly when they were stocked, and could tell you anything you wanted to know about crappie or smallmouth bass. Fishing was never just a hobby for him. It was something he truly loved and gladly shared with others.

Larry also had a deep love for animals and a strong connection to his family land. Although he lived in Georgia for several years, he returned to Fayetteville to live on the family farm with his mother when his father became ill. He remained there until he was no longer able to live on his own.

In accordance with his wishes, no formal services will be held. A dinner to celebrate and remember his life will be held at a later date.

Larry will be remembered for his quiet strength, his deep knowledge of the outdoors, his love of family, and the simple joy he found in a good fishing spot.

The family would like to deeply thank the staff at both Hospice of Southern WV and Bowyer’s Hospice House for the care and compassion they gave over the last year. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Larry’s name to Bowyer’s Hospice House.
