Larry Johnson Obituary

Visit the Dougherty Funeral Home - Duluth website to view the full obituary.

Larry passed away this past Thursday after a fourth battle against cancer with the strength you’d have expected. Born in Superior, the middle of five sons, he lived a quiet life in Duluth as a School Psychologist. His primary work of 38 jobs he claimed to have had starting as a caddy before switching to small engine repair. Handy as heck, he could fix anything and get your oil changed on the regular. Responsible, respected, resilient and humble all qualities forged after being drafted to the Marine Corp, serving and surviving the Viet Nam war. Honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal before heading back to Duluth to complete his education, start a family and his career. Received his Bachelor’s degree from UMN-Twin Cities and his Master’s degree from UW-Superior in psychology.

He appreciated the simple things, history, knowledge, tending to his apple trees, the Weather Channel, any classic movies with Audie Murphy, Elvis, and perhaps one day owning a ’63 Vette with a split rear window again. Tough guy with a big heart, who loved the USA, and his Unions starting as a steward while working at Hibbing Taconite. A true team player who wanted to see others succeed and help provide them with the tools. His sacrifice of always putting others first garnered respect by all who will remember him and the example he set.

Larry is survived by his children, Clint, Leah (Stevon) their children Isaac & Jonah, and Larry Michael Jr. (Chelsea); his brother, Roger (Cindy); many nieces and nephews, Jason, Nicci, Ben, Jodie, Jamie, Jessica; along with his ex-wife, Laurie; and his former in-laws who all remained dear to him. He wanted to also appreciate his mentor Dr. Dave Wangen, along with his closest friends Tom Shanks, Rhode Johnson and Tony Dockendorf.

Always the giver, in lieu of flowers please consider his favorite charities Toys for Tots and the Disabled Vets of America.

A Visitation is scheduled Monday, March 9th from 11am to 1pm, at Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E, Second Street, Duluth with Military Burial at the Veterans Cemetery at 2pm, immediately followed by a social for those interested at Ridgeview Country Club starting at 3pm.

Special thanks to the care and hospice teams at Essentia and Ecumen for their support along his journey. He continued teaching until the very end, though we are certain there are more lessons yet to come.

Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 218-727-3555.
