ROCKY MOUNT – Larry Ray Kidd, age 69, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2025. Born in Beckley, WV on September 19, 1955, he was the son of the late William Kidd. He was also preceded in death by his stepdaughter Tamika Jones.
A proud U.S. Marine, Larry bravely served his country, embodying the values of honor, courage, and commitment. His dedication to service was a testament to his strong character.
Larry had a zest for life that was evident in his many passions. Carpentry was more than just a hobby; it was a calling. He found immense joy in bringing his visions to life, meticulously crafting beautiful pieces with his own hands. His family will forever cherish the tangible memories of his talent and dedication.
Larry also had a knack for cooking, and his kitchen was often filled with the delicious aromas of his culinary creations. His steaks, ribs, and lasagna were legendary among family and friends, always prepared with love and guaranteed to bring smiles to everyone's faces. Beyond the kitchen, Larry found solace and satisfaction in his garden, nurturing plants with the same care and attention he gave to everything he did.
Larry had a deep appreciation for music and wasn't shy about sharing his love for it. He found immense joy in dancing and singing, often belting out tunes by his idol, Elvis. While Elvis held a special place in his heart, his absolute favorite song was "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison, a tune that perfectly encapsulated his vibrant and joyful spirit. He also loved to serenade his beloved wife with "Angel in the Sky," a song that beautifully captured the depth of his affection. But above all else, Larry's greatest joy was his family. His daughter, Teonna, was truly the apple of his eye, and he cherished every moment spent with her.
Larry lived by his personal mantra: "I do one thing at a time, I do it very well, and then I move on." This philosophy guided him in all aspects of his life, from his meticulous carpentry to his dedicated service, and it's a legacy that was instilled in his children and will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Larry's memory will be cherished by his loving family, countless friends, and all who were touched by his incredible warmth and generosity. While he may no longer be with us, his spirit will live on in the beautiful things he built, the delicious meals he shared, the songs he sang, and the love he so freely gave. To his daughter Teonna, he was nothing short of Superman. From taking her to school each day and making Christmas feel magical, to sharing life lessons that shaped her path-he was her provider, her protector. Teonna was truly a daddy's girl, and in her eyes, he was perfect in every way. He often thought she never listened to all the 'boring dad talks,' but every lesson he gave her equipped her for the 30 years they spent together. She took dozens of pictures and videos over the years, and now, those moments have become treasured memories she holds close to her heart.
Larry is survived by his wife of 11 years, Tawanna Kidd; daughter, Teonna Kidd; step daughters, Tonya Belt, and Tennille Jones; son, Larry Ray Cutler; granddaughter, Tru Love White; mother, Gail Bazzie Kidd; sister, Deborah Vollmer; aunt, Sandra Dewolf, Beverly Bazzie; nieces, Jessica Vollmer, Kristen Sloan and Rhonda Houston; and friends, Dewayne Richards, Monica McCracken and Teresa Richards.
Services will be private.
