Larry Gene Mims, age 82, of London, Kentucky joined his Heavenly Father on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Hillcrest Health and Rehabilitation Center in Corbin.
Born in Clanton, Alabama on April 4, 1942. He served in the Air Force before finding his way to Corbin, Kentucky. It is here that he found the love of his life Judy. They shared 59 years together and had two children Larry Mims, and Stacy White. The family spent a few years in Ohio, and Florida, before making London, KY their home. The family grew in 2002 with a grandson Charles “T.J.” Thurman.
Dad shined with a bright light. He enjoyed making people laugh. As a truck driver for twenty-four years, Larry never met a stranger and saw many wonderful places looking at the world through a windshield. After retiring, he thrived working at the Crooked Creek Golf course. He met many people of London there, and loved working outside. He was passionate about golf and was always ready to trade a golf tip or two.
His hobbies included gardening, watching SCI-FI movies and puzzles. He loved animals, especially the family pets. He was always sneaking them treats. He loved playing sports especially bowling, tennis, and golf. He luckily made a hole in one at two different times. He was a fan of Alabama football, and was easily recognized around town as the tall man who always wears an Alabama hat.
Dad built a life he was proud of - a life where family came first. A life of genuine gratitude that was enriched with love, and laughter.
Dad was most himself as the mischievous grinning Grandpa. I asked T.J. what he wanted me to share and his immediate answer was, “Grandpa was the funny man.” Dad loved to laugh. He loved telling jokes, or acting silly. You can’t think of Daddy without remembering something funny he said, or did. What a gift he gave us.
Finally, from that little girl beaming up with pride at her handsome Daddy sitting next to her in church, I want to share one of his favorite bible verses. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” - John 3:16.
Larry, Big Larry, Daddy, and Grandpa, lives in our hearts with a smile - always.
In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by, siblings, Shirley Justice and Norman Mims.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchild, he is survived by siblings, Tim Mims, and Nancy Wilbanks
