Larry Frey Morgan was born December 4, 1942 to W.J. "Dub" and Martha Jean Morgan in New Edinburg, AR. He departed this life to begin the next on March 14, 2024. Larry is survived by his daughter, Lisa and son in law Bret Nutt of Fordyce; son in law, Warren Nichols of Thornton; his sister, Virginia Mann of New Edinburg; five grandchildren, Kyle Nichols, Morgan and Sawyer Stanton, Suellen and Seth West, Austin Hugh and Marla Nutt, and Mason and Warren West; five great-grandchildren, Will, Adleigh, Moseley, Blaine, and Mac. Larry was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Lanelle Henderson Morgan; his daughter, Lori Lynn Nichols, his parents; a sister, Evelyn Bowen; and nephews, Dennis Morgan and Jason Thompson.
Larry grew up in New Edinburg, and later married Lanelle and moved to Fordyce. There they built a life that lasted 41 years until her passing in 2005. They raised two beautiful girls, who married two Ole Fordyce Boys that he "never really wanted, but would not take nothing for em now". He was happiest when surrounded by his family. He was proud of his kids and grandkids, and then he was proud of his great grand kids. Larry was active in The Temple Baptist Church, and served decades as a deacon. He was secure in his faith, and maintained perfect Sunday School attendance for over 50 years until his health would not allow. Larry was a logging contractor for 60 plus years and was awarded "Logger of the Year", as well as many other industry accolades. He donated to the Log a Load for Kids program that was instrumental in the advancement of Arkansas Children's Hospital. He loved the woods and logged because it was something that was inside of him, a true calling. He started with his Dad skidding logs behind a mule team and finished with a fully mechanized operation, with his daughter Lisa at his side for three generations of doing what he loved. Of this he was proud. Larry was an outdoorsman. He loved to fish with his nephews and occasionally with his sons- in-law, as long as they would pull up all the shoals and he didn't have to get his feet wet. He was always excited when deer season came around, and Larry lead the Morgan Hunting Club for many years, always throwing a big fish fry to start things off. Later in life, he moved his hunting spot to Calhoun County to spend time with his children and grandchildren. Larry never met a stranger, and had enough stories to fill volumes, a true Morgan trait. He would entertain around the fire pit or anywhere he happened to find someone to listen, and always worked a concern for your relationship with the Lord into the conversation. This world was better with him in it.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Temple Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Smith and Dusty Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow at Smith-Morgan Cemetery with Rev. Jacob Ricker officiating. Arrangements are by Benton Funeral Home of Fordyce.
