Larry Paxton Obituary

Larry Lee Paxton, age 87, of Stuart, Nebraska, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Born on August 29, 1938, in Stuart to Orville "Bill" and Carmen (Cobb) Paxton, Larry was raised on a farm southwest of town until 1942, when his parents purchased land three miles west of Stuart that would become his lifelong home ranch.

Larry attended District 58 country grade school and graduated from Stuart High School in 1955. He pursued higher education and football athletics at Norfolk Junior College, followed by studies in engineering and football at Doane College, and then South Dakota State University in Brookings. Ultimately, the call of the ranch brought him back home.

In July 1959, Larry married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Evelyn Kaup, beginning a devoted 66-year union blessed with seven children. Together, they built a life rooted in family, faith, hard work, and community. Larry worked as a Brand Inspector and later founded a trucking business, hauling cattle, corn, meat, and fruit across the country. His final haul was in 2015 for Bob Kaup to Chappell, Nebraska.

Larry was deeply committed to his community, serving on the Township Board, Stuart High School Board, and the Village Board for 23 years, stepping down in February 2025. He coached boys' basketball and played on local baseball teams, later coaching men's softball. His love of sports carried into his role as a proud grandfather. Cheering on his grandchildren, Larry loved to discuss how the games were played and how the kids performed and was always willing to offer advice on how they could improve their skills. The kids always had to check in with Grandpa at the end of the game to hear how they did.

Larry is survived by his wife Evelyn and children: Donna & Dan Malone, Marde Paxton, Dale Paxton & Jerri, Darrin & Sharon Paxton, Debbie & Larry Tejral, Dana & Amanda Paxton, and Darby & Sara Paxton. Larry leaves behind 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Siblings-in-law: Bob & Marge Kaup, Darlene Kaup; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, Bill & Carmen Paxton, in-laws Aloys & Gertrude Kaup, eldest son, Darrell Paxton, and brother-in-law Dick Kaup.

His legacy of love, service, faith, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
