Larry Riegel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes - Durand Chapel on Sep. 16, 2025.

Larry Lee Riegel, aged 70, of Corunna, Michigan, was called home on September 15, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in Owosso, with his wife Jeanne by his side. In May, Larry had surgery for pancreatic cancer. The surgery went well but Larry's health challenges continued; he suffered 2 strokes and the cancer had spread. He fought it all, but ultimately, there was no hope for recovery. Jeanne asked for prayers for Larry to have a quick and peaceful release from his earthly journey. Those prayers were answered.

Larry was born on August 2, 1955, in Flint, Michigan, to Ruth Elaine (Robinson) Riegel and Richard Harold Riegel. Larry and Jeanne Kidle were married at a little white chapel south of Fenton, Michigan. They blended their families and recently celebrated their 25th anniversary.

Larry proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army and remained a dedicated patriot throughout his life. While in the army he studied engineering to learn about bridges to find the best way to blow them up. The training led into an engineering career. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 57 in Owosso, and he enjoyed volunteering there whenever he could. Larry particularly liked the friends he made at the Post and working poker nights with them.

He graduated from Mott Community College with an Associate of Science degree with high honors. Larry became a CAD designer and most recently worked at ProTech Machine Inc in Burton. He was an engineer at heart and enjoyed the work he did as a machine designer and mentoring others. After he met Jeanne (who worked at H&R Block), he also took the Tax Course, and they worked as Tax Professionals together for 22 years at the H&R Block in Grand Blanc. He was an Enrolled Agent, which allowed him to practice before the IRS.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanne. He also leaves behind his brother Duane Riegel, sisters Penny Rhodes and Juliann Riegel, and several nieces and nephews. Also, the Kidle siblings: Nancy (Dan) Lori, John M Kidle, Eric Kidle, Christopher Kidle and Martha Kidle will miss him.

Larry will be missed by his children and grandchildren Larry (Reina) Riegel Jr (daughters Gabriella and Valerie), Nathen (Jami) Riegel (children Makayla, Austin, and Nicholas), Rebecca Riegel (children Airabella and Richard), Jacob (Rebecca) Frazee (daughter Lauren, grandchildren Jackson and Aaliyah), John (Cecelia) Frazee (daughter Katharine), and Eva (Brack Hassell) Darling (children Benton and Parker), Beth (Brian) Curran (children Rowan and Clara) and his loyal German short-haired pointer, Greyson.

Larry was a quiet man with a kind heart and a subtle sense of humor. After leaving the Army, he vowed never to shave again and many of us never saw his face. He was competitive and always up for a challenge – or just a good Euchre game. He was patient and determined (not stubborn!) and would tackle big jobs bit by bit until they were completed. He enjoyed cooking and his favorite meals included gravy made by his very own hands. A perfect meal was always a priority! He found joy working in the yard in the home he loved. He was always up for a trip to upper Michigan for waterfalls, lighthouses and casinos. Weekends would find him watching football and he supported the Detroit Lions, even in the years they didn't do so well. Larry loved his family and always had an open lap for grandchildren.

A funeral service to honor Larry's life will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes – Durand Chapel, located at 501 N. Saginaw St., Durand, Michigan. The family will receive friends for visitation at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 AM until the time of service.

Burial with military honors will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan, with details to be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Owosso American Legion. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.WatkinsFuneralHomes.com
