Larry Robbins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kincannon Funeral Home on Nov. 21, 2023.

Larry F. Robbins, 75, passed away at his home in Altus, Oklahoma on Monday, November 20, 2023. The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Monday, November 27, 2023 at Kincannon Funeral Home. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Larry F. Robbins was born on August 14, 1948, in Altus to Robert Dan and Alma (Waldroop) Robbins. He grew up on the family farm at Ozark, seven miles east of Altus, where he would later return to raise his own family.

As a youngster he attended Eugene Fields elementary school and went on to graduate from Altus High School in 1966. During high school, he was active in Future Farmers of America, showed livestock, and participated in various shenanigans with his good friends, who we will not name. After graduation, he attended the Oklahoma State University School of Technical Training in Okmulgee, where he received training in diesel mechanics. Following his time in Okmulgee, he returned to Ozark to farm. Larry joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard in 1969. He was trained as an artillery surveyor, but happily served as the unit’s mail carrier, which he claimed was a great gig. His unit responded to the aftermath of the tornadoes that hit Altus and other areas in 1972 and assisted in quelling the riot at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester in 1973.

On December 30, 1975, Larry made the smartest move of his life when he worked in a last-minute tax deduction and married Marilee Miller. Together they grew and tended to the family farm where they lovingly raised their two children, Sommer and Ryan. Larry took farming seriously. He was meticulous and made sure the whole family was a part of the operation, including irrigating cotton every summer. Larry and the kids worked as the night crew, and despite his many accomplishments, he was never able to teach the kids to hold that flashlight “just right” when starting tubes or checking the rows and ditches!

Larry loved to play pranks, whether he was at the gin, John Deere, Kirby’s, or around family or friends; he always had something up his sleeve. While he probably wouldn’t admit it, he loved all children and loved to give kids a hard time. He was also quite a historian. He knew all about World War II, trains, and received training in blacksmithing.

Larry was very proud of his family. He marveled at Ryan’s farming capabilities and was so impressed by all his accomplishments. He was also delighted that Sommer took his advice and “got a good education.”

He thoroughly enjoyed his 4 grandchildren, Rhett, Miller, Suttin, and Scout. He attended all their events and knew without a doubt his grandkids were the smartest!

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Alma Robbins; his brother, Ronald Robbins; and his in-laws, Courtney and Pat Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Marilee, who worked tirelessly to provide him with the best care possible during his illness; his daughter, Sommer and her husband, Chad Levings; his son, Ryan and his wife, Kortni; four grandchildren, Rhett Robbins, Miller Levings, Suttin Robbins, and L. Scout Levings; brother and sister in law, Robbie and Linda Robbins; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Sonny and Lorenda Miller and Tim and Jerri Lynn Miller; sister-in-law and husband, Judy and Sam Lowery; many nieces and nephews; the Konen brothers; and many friends throughout the area.

A special thanks to Jackson County Hospice and Home Health Care employees (Melinda, Suzanne, and Terry) and Tessie, who is a wonderful advocate and caregiver.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s diseases rob us of our loved ones. Take care of yourself and be mindful of your brain health.
