On Friday November 21, 2025, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lawrence (Larry) James Turton succumbed to injuries sustained in a car accident on November 4, 2025, in Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

Larry was born November 8, 1939, in Lorian, Ohio, the son of Casimer F. Turton and Louise M. (Scislowski) Turton.

In 1962 Larry met and married the love of his life, Jeannette Marie Turton (Camino). From this union four children were born: Michael Turton (Ging Dialo) of the Philippines; Terece L. Turton Los Almos New Mexico; Katherine M. Turton Indiana, Pennsylvania and Deborah A. Turton (Les Cannon) Rockville, MD.

Those four children gave him seven grandchildren: Gwendolyn, Bernadette (Thomas Rimilinger), Cynthia, Sebastian (Fatima Vista), Sheridan, Daniel and Meaghan. These grandchildren gave him much pleasure and joy keeping him young and living life to the fullest. He was always so proud of their accomplishments and what they did with their lives. Finally, Larry lived long enough to meet his first great grandchild Felix Issac Rimlinger.

Larry is survived by three brothers and two sisters: Antoinette Twary, Los Almos, New Mexico; Sylvia Baracz and husband Norman, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Casimer M. Turton and wife Anna, of Greenville North Carolina; Timothy Turton and wife Robyn, of Huntersville, North Carolina; and Dennis Turton and wife Sue, of Great Falls, Montana. Also surviving are his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Nicholas and Barbara Camino of Avon Lake, Ohio. Larry is predeceased by his parents, his wife Jeannette Marie Turton, two sisters, Patricia Turton and Marcella Majkut, two brothers, Richard Turton and Jerome Turton, and one nephew James Turton.

Larry attended Lorian (Ohio) High School graduating in 1957, John Carroll University where he received an AB, Western Reserve University, where he received an MA and University of Kansas, where he received his Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology.

Larry's teaching career spanned 35 years, where he taught at Kansas, Bowling Green State University of Ohio, University of Michigan, University of Nebraska, and ending his career at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he taught for 22 years. Larry left his mark wherever he taught, giving his students 100% of his time and talents and bringing out the best in each one of them. While at IUP he served as assistant Chair and Chair of the Department of Special Education and Clinical Services. He was a member of ASHA, AAMD, CEC, and PSHA over the years. He served as Vice-President of PSHA for two terms. Outside of work he served as a Board Member and Chairperson of Friends of the Parks of Indiana County. He was a member of St. Thomas More University Parish.

Larry was the chair of the department when I joined as a new faculty who lacked confidence and was in the midst of a difficult life experience. He provided warm support in a manner that was very comforting. I have many memories of this but will only share one. In my early years I had some public speaking anxieties. When we did a joint presentation at a national conference, I asked him to leave the room during my portion! He so sweetly obliged without making me feel embarrassed(or unprofessional) about my odd request. I also found him to be a wonderful collaborator on research and he handled the stats for several projects. I will remember him as a smart, sweet and funny man that I was lucky to know. Deep condolences to his family and all the others who will mourn his loss.

Larry was my respected colleague in the Special Education Department at IUP. I remember his care towards me on the day I interviewed for a faculty position in the department as I had started that day with an early morning, poorly timed root canal procedure. He talked to me about how the day was going to unfold, who I would be speaking with, and a few hints of what each person would be interested hearing about from my CV. I remember feeling reassured that I would get through the day. Larry and I both enjoyed gardening and shared plants back and forth. He was a respected colleague but also a friend with a great giggle. I will always think of him with great fondness. I send along sincere condolences to Larry's and Jean's loving family.
