Larry Varvel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bolock Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. - Cresco on Jan. 7, 2026.
Larry Eugene Varvel, 82, of Cresco, passed away in his home on Sunday, January 4, 2026. Born in Decatur, IL he was the son of the late Bernard and Margaret (Moore) Varvel. Larry was the beloved husband of Beverly (Wescott) Varvel with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. At the age of 10 Larry moved to Canadensis, where he met his lifelong best friend and fishing buddy, Fred Pugh. Larry graduated from Barrett High School class of 1961. He served his country honorably as an Airman Second Class in the United States Air Force. Larry enjoyed many past times throughout the years, coaching baseball for both his children, was the Scout Master for Troop #89, coached youth bowling and was a member of the Pit Crew and raced with Paul Gravel on Friday and Saturday Nights at Moc-A-Tek speedway of Wayne County. Larry loved to bowl and above all, he enjoyed fishing. He was a member of Canadensis United Methodist Church. Larry's life was a quiet lesson in what it means to show up and give your all, day after day. His work ethic was inspiring and something to envy. From setting pins at the local bowling alley, to caddying at Buck Hill Golf Course, to pumping gas at Vick Rozzell's station, he met every job with the same dedication. He built homes for Labar Builders, took odd jobs at the Pocono Rabbit Farm and as he would say, "Pounded nails" in the box and crate shop at the Tobyhanna Army Depot until he retired. Larry never shyed away from hard work, and even after retirement you could find him at Mick Motors, where you didn't just get gas; you were greeted with a smile, a friendly word and most likely a bit of local gossip shared with a twinkle in his eye!
In addition to his wife, Beverly, Larry will be lovingly remembered by his son, Scott Varvel and his wife Andrea; daughter, Stacy Esenwein and her companion Bill; brother, Marty Varvel and his wife Beth; grandchildren, Matt Varvel and his wife Katlyn, Jeremy Varvel, Jonathon Varvel and C.J. Varvel; great grandchildren, Derek, Bella, Haillie and Mason, as well as, many beloved nieces, nephews and a host of in laws.
Services: A Memorial Service with military honors will take place at 3:00P.M. on Saturday, January 10, 2026 in the Bolock Funeral Home, 6148 Paradise Valley Road, Cresco Pa 18326 where the family will receive friends and relatives from 2:00P.M. until the time of service.
Contributions: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Canadensis United Methodist Church, 1349 PA-390, Canadensis, PA 18325.
