Larry Weslock Obituary
Larry was born December 20, 1941 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Ernest and Martha Weslock. He grew up with his twin brother Terry, and his sister Carol. Larry graduated from Portage High School in 1960. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Christian Education from Concordia River Forest and Master's Degree from Western Michigan University. Larry was a well known and loved teacher. During his internship, he taught 3rd and 4th grade, drove the school bus, and his wife, Cari, was the school secretary. In Brazilton, Kansas, he taught K-8 in a one-room schoolhouse. Larry spent 40 years teaching at Portage Public Schools mainly in elementary school classrooms. During the last 15 years of his career, he moved into Information Technology. In 2002, Larry was awarded the Outstanding Technology Using Educator Award from MACUL, Michigan Association of Computer Users in Learning.
He met his future bride, Cari Luegge, in 1962 and they were married July 21, 1963. After a few years of marriage, Larry and Cari decided to settle into an old farmhouse in Schoolcraft, Michigan where they would raise their family. Their five children, David, Kurt, Rick, Marcie, and Cathy enjoyed many wonderful memories of growing up in that house. Larry completed so many projects over the years including: garages, bathrooms, wood stoves, cutting cords of wood, decks, redoing kids rooms, enclosing the front porch, and moving the stairway. The house was constantly being upgraded. All five children graduated from Schoolcraft High School, and Larry and Cari lived there until 2003, when they retired and moved to South Carolina.
In retirement, Larry and Cari enjoyed living in South Carolina in the winters, and summers at The Cabin in Syracuse, Indiana. They spent their many years traveling to see friends and family, cruising, being part of the congregation at All Saints Lutheran Church, and playing lots of Hand and Foot with friends and family.
Larry was very active. Throughout the years, he enjoyed cross country skiing, camping, running, biking, sailing, kayaking, boating, as well as wood working, house repairs, stained glass, diamond painting, and more. The family joked he would take a break from mowing the lawn to vacuum the house. Larry was a devoted, patient, and loving husband. He was the most fantastic Dad five kids could ever ask for. He attended every game or event they ever had; cheering loud across the court, chasing them on the cross-country course, and always supporting them. He then spent time with his nine grandkids, attending their games and concerts, taking them to the zoo, or reading them books.
Larry passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Martha Weslock. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Cari; children David Weslock of Indian Land, SC, Kurt (Debbie) Weslock of Howell, MI, Rick (Laura) Weslock of Fort Mill, SC, Marcie (Steve) Weslock of Golden Valley, MN, and Cathy (Carl) Schutt of Crystal, MN; grandchildren, Sarah (Alex) Carignan, Joshua Weslock, Cory Weslock, Leah Weslock, Ransom Weslock, Noah (Ana) Weslock, Reece Weslock, Lydia Schutt, and Clara Tatzmann; siblings Terry (Naomi) Weslock and Carol (Ken) Marbaugh and nieces, nephews and many close friends.
