Larry Winthrop Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McWhorter Funeral Home - Gilmer on Dec. 28, 2024.
Larry Douglas Winthrop, 71, of Gilmer, Texas was born on November 2, 1953, to Charles David Winthrop Sr. and Lena Lois Lane Winthrop and passed from this life on December 22, 2024, in Longview, Texas.
Larry married Tammy Jones on July 17, 1982, in Scroggins, Texas. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Tammy Winthrop; son, Dustin Winthrop; daughter, Brandy Fernandez; brother, Ron Winthrop (Connie); sister, Elaine Modisette; and grandchildren, Kayli Hardin, Sage Hardin, and Lake Fernandez.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles David Winthrop Jr.; and sisters, Brenda Venegas, and Donna Kay Winthrop.
For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.
(Hebrews 3:14 NLT)
Larry understood God's definition of love and he loved God and knew that God loved him. By faith, he was sure that he would spend eternity in heaven. He inherited his mother's heart, she loved everyone and was generous to all, family, friends, or strangers.
Larry was a loving husband and father. Even after 42 years of marriage, he still referred to his wife Tammy as his "bride" and spoiled her just a bit. He had some health issues that probably gave him a premonition of death and over the last year or so he had taken steps to secure certain things for Tammy's future.
Larry loved his cousins and extended family and kept in touch through the years. Hunter Sorrells (nephew) stated, "Larry was a mountain of personality who left a lasting impression on everyone he met." What a statement. He enjoyed going to family reunions and keeping up. When we released the news of his passing, family members were shocked. Cousin Wayne Rhodes could not believe it because he had just spoken with him.
Larry was a loyal friend to so many; always checking on them and praying for the needs they shared with him; quickly starting prayer chains for help and support. He was a good listener and could offer good advice. While working in Russia, he met a citizen that was a starving artist that could not find nor afford decent art supplies. Larry was able to get the supplies he needed from the States, including a pair of Converse shoes that his daughter had seen in a magazine. Sergey has gone on to be a prominent Sakhalin artist and lifelong friend.
Larry was a fabulous cook and took such joy in sharing his gift with others. He loved to post pictures of his creations on FB. His cooking did require an investment into all the latest gadgets and technologies lol.
He loved landscaping and planting beautiful flowers and plants. He loved making it beautiful for his "bride" and sharing photos of his latest projects on FB. Adding rocks to a yard was one of his favorites; there is not a house that he has ever lived in that did not have tons of rocks and boulders hauled to it. He did have quite an imagination for landscape design and was still going strong in Gilmer. A nice yard with lots of flowers and trees is perfect for birds. He enjoyed feeding the birds, building birdhouses for the bluebirds, feeders for the hummers, and feeders for any bird that might be traveling by. He had an app on his phone that enabled him to record the birds sounds and then identify them. He really enjoyed that when the non-native birds would migrate through the area.
His love for his fur buddies ranked close to family; to say that they are well taken care of is an understatement. Finn and Meeka are the current royalty with Tyson, Bogey, Murfy, and Diego before them. He had a heart for all dogs and actively participated with FB lost and found and adoptions.
Larry had many accomplishments in life. He was blessed with a wonderful marriage for 42 years, had a successful career that let him travel the world. His greatest accomplishment was his relationship with God and the fact that he celebrated Christmas 2024 face-to-face with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He will be greatly missed here but anyone who wants to can join him in eternity.
