Lary Dean "Quig" Quigley, 88, of Greenville, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at HSHS Family Hospital in
Greenville.

Lary and his twin brother Gary were born in Dowell, Illinois, on January 6, 1937, to Robert and Lillian (Dirler) Quigley. Quig as he was lovingly known, grew up in New Athens where he attended local schools before joining the United States Navy in 1955. Quig served two years of active duty at Aickman Air Base and Glenview Naval Station and was honorably discharged in 1957. Following his service, he moved to Red Bud, Illinois, where he married Mary Hess and became the proud father of three children. After their divorce, he later married Joyce Meskil on March 15, 1975, in Belleville, Illinois. They shared 50 years of marriage, and she survives.

A hardworking and dependable man, Quig spent his entire career in the coal mines. He began with Peabody in 1962, then moved to Consolidated Coal in 1966 from which he retired. He was a proud union member and dedicated leader, serving as president of his Local 1458 for more than 30 years.

Quig was one of a kind-strong-willed, witty, and always early. Known as a jokester with a heart for family and community, he expressed his love more through action than words. He valued church, loved the outdoors, and spent countless hours hunting and fishing. He also had a fondness for old-school country music and cherished hymns.

He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Lillian; his twin brother, Gary; and his son-in-law, Jerry Nunn.

Surviving him are his wife, Joyce of Greenville, Illinois; sister, Kathy Tissier of Freeburg, Illinois; children Debbie (Jim) Keller of Prairie du Rocher, Illinois, Michael Quigley of Red Bud, Illinois, and Kimberly Quigley-Nunn of Talbot, Tennessee; grandchildren Dawn (Brian) Patterson, Shawn (Danielle) Quigley, and Mackenzie Quigley; great-grandchildren Damian, Blaine, and Liam; great-great-grandchild Bentley and one on the way.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Wisetown Baptist Church, 173 Wisetown Road, Greenville, Illinois, 62246.

Military honors and inurnment will take place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, on Monday, September 29, 2025.
