Laura Ann Metts Marsh, age 92, of
Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts, formerly of Plymouth, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2024 at the Newfield House Nursing Home after a long illness.
Laura was born on June 4, 1931 in Tunnel Springs, Alabama to the late Richard F Metts and Fannie M Metts. She was the devoted wife of sixty-seven years to Albert Boardman Marsh who predeceased her in September 2020. Loving mother of Jane E. Marsh of Sagamore Beach, and Nancy Marsh Terry of
Red Hook, NY, grandmother of Charlotte Linn Terry of Paterson, NJ. Laura is predeceased by her sister Manzelle M Andress, brother Clifford E Metts, sister Daphene South, brother Hildreth W Metts, sister Furn C Nobles, and brother Edward C Metts. Survivied by her sister-in-law Inez Metts and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
Laura grew up in southern Alabama as the youngest of seven siblings in a large farm family. Starting at a very young age, when she wasn't helping with farm chores, she could often be found reading a book. A passion for reading was something she enjoyed all her life.
She met her husband Albert at a Navy dance in
Mobile, Alabama when she was in her early twenties. While Al was on active duty, they lived in Quonset, Rhode Island and
Milton, Florida before moving to Al's hometown of Plymouth in 1956, settling in a family homestead in Ellisville.
The job description for Laura's role as homemaker includes many hats. In addition to chief cook and bottle washer, she maintained the financial records for the family businesses of lobster fishing and cranberry growing. She could often be found painting and wallpapering the old house in Ellisville, painting pot buoys, working in the large family garden, which led to canning and freezing of the garden's harvest. She was an avid seamstress as well as a rug braider. One of her more difficult accomplishments was sewing the heavy canvas stern sails for Al's lobster boats. Her beautiful, wool rugs could be found in all rooms of the family home. She loved gardening, reading, and cooking. Family was very important to her and many family and friend get togethers were enjoyed in hers and Al's home.
She was always an active member of the church and volunteered for many years at Swift Memorial United Methodist Church's Thrift Shop. In her younger years she volunteered for the American Red Cross, was a Plymouth Town Meeting member, a member of the Plymouth Conservation Commission, a Sunday School Teacher, and a Brownie Leader. Laura and her husband Al were walkers and volunteers at the Cape Cod Canal Spirit of Liberty Walk in Remembrance of 9/11.
Up until the end Laura maintained her kindness, grace, compassion, appreciation of beauty, love of family and friends, and expressed gratitude for her long life, full of wonderful and varied experiences.
Laura cherished her friendships, developing them at each stage of her life, with most of these lasting the remainder of her life. Almost until her last breath, she was using her iPad to email with friends and family.
The family would like to express its sincere gratitude for all the kindness and exceptional care the Newfield House provided for the last three plus years. Between the wonderful staff of the Newfield House and the additional care provided by Cranberry Hospice, her last days were made easier for both Laura and her family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Plymouth County Wildlands Trust, Friends of Ellisville Marsh, or The Swift Memorial United Methodist Church.
Interment will be held Friday, March 8th, 1:00 pm at Vine Hills Cemetery in
Plymouth, Massachusetts. There will be a Celebration of Life for both Laura and her husband Albert on Saturday, March 9th at Swift Memorial United Methodist Church in
Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts at 11:00 am.
