Laura Scammell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hurst Scott Funeral Home on Feb. 12, 2026.
Laura Lynn Scammell, a vibrant soul who lit up every room with her energy and laughter, passed away peacefully at her home in Tazewell, Virginia, on February 11, 2026.

Laura's life was a testament to resilience. While she faced many difficult battles, she never stopped trying to recover. Her journey was marked by a persistent desire for healing, fueled by her deep love for her family and her unwavering spirit. Though she walked through many shadows, her heart remained focused on the light.

A woman of profound faith, Laura loved the Lord and found strength and peace in praise and worship music. Her compassion was limitless; she was a frequent and comforting presence sitting with the ill in the hospital, ensuring no one faced their journey alone. Laura also channeled her creative spirit into adult coloring books and cherished every moment spent hiking in nature with her son Eli.

Animals were her lifelong passion and calling. As a talented canine beautician, she owned and operated her own dog grooming business, Hounding Mill Grooming, where she treated every animal with the same devotion she gave her beloved dog, Walter.

Laura was preceded in death by her father, Clardy Joe Scammell, and her brother, Clardy Joe Scammell, Jr.

She is survived by:

Her mother, Claudette Stevenson Scammell

Her daughter, Ashley Bunting, her companion Desmond of Maine

Her son, Eli Willis

Her sisters, Audrey Tiller and husband, Leslie, of Cedar Bluff, VA, and Vicki Moore of Andrews, SC

Several nieces, nephews, and a host of dear friends.

In honor of Laura's legacy of joy and praise:

"To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair." - Isaiah 61:3

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.

Funeral services will be Sunday, February 15, 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell, Virginia, with the Rev. Steve Branch officiating. Burial will be private at the Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
