Laureat "Larry" Grondin, of Enfield, Connecticut, passed away early Monday morning, November 3, 2025. Born on August 11, 1949, in St. Clotilde de Beauce, Quebec, Canada, to Philippe Grondin and Florence Pomerleau, Larry lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a love for both his native Quebec and his adopted home in the United States.
Larry was the fourth of nine siblings and was raised on the family farm. He developed an early love for working on the farm and with the dairy cows. He served his local community as an altar boy at the Catholic church. At 18, he moved to Hartford, CT, on a work visa to join his brother Bertrand, who taught him the trade of drywall installation. This became the foundation for his successful 40-year career in Connecticut.
Larry was a man who loved to keep busy. He was known for being an early riser, even on vacation, to make breakfast and enjoy a cup of coffee. He was well known as the family's master chef at brunch, whipping up many delicious meals for all. He was a lifelong Montreal Canadiens fan, enjoying hockey in his younger years, and always had a home project lined up, even renovating the ranch-style house he bought for his family.
His preferred vacation spot was always by the ocean, leading to many memorable family trips to the shore where he could sit on the beach, enjoy the waves, and savor fresh seafood, one of his favorite foods. He was also a lover of pizza, with his daughter Lucie even joking that he kept the local pizza places in business with his love for pizza.
Though his primary residence was in Enfield, his heart remained connected to Quebec. He was proud to earn his U.S. citizenship and call the U.S. home, yet he always enjoyed visiting his childhood home. He loved spending summers in Quebec, managing the property, planting maple trees, riding his quad, and spending time with friends and family.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife, Claudette; his daughter, Caroline and her husband Jeff Mickiewicz, and their two daughters, Emma and Sophie; and his daughter, Lucie and her husband Mike Rubba. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Paul Wellspeak.
He leaves behind four brothers, Jean-Paul Grondin (Maryse), Camil Grondin (Claire), Normand Grondin (Ginette), and Jean-Rock Grondin (Line); three sister-in-laws, Lisette, Hugette, and Diane, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Anne-Marie Wellspeak, his parents, Florence Pomerleau and Philippe Grondin; his brothers Bertrand Grondin, Denis Grondin, and Gaetan Grondin; his sister Celine Grondin; and his brother-in-law Yvan Couture.
Please join us in celebrating his life on Friday November 14th, 2025 between 5-8pm at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapel at 43 Shaker Road, Enfield, CT 06082. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 10:30 am in St. Bernard Church (St. Jeanne Jugan Parish) 426 Hazard Ave. Enfield. (Go directly to church). Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Canada.
