Laurel Lea Sheets, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on October 10, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on June 24, 1950, in Madison, Indiana, Laurel lived a life marked by hard work and family bonds that will last in the hearts of her family forever.
A dedicated union millwright, Laurel was known for her remarkable work ethic and determination. Her career was a testament to her strength and resilience, qualities that defined her character throughout her life. Outside of work, she found joy in simple pleasures, whether it was a shopping trip to Goodwill or sharing laughs at the casino with her sister, Loretta. Her spirit shone brightly during weekly meals at Texas Roadhouse, where she delighted in the joy of her favorite meal.
Laurel's family was her greatest treasure. She is survived by her loving sons, C. David (Cindy) Sheets and Michael L. (Lisa) Sheets. Her legacy continues in her grandchildren who brought her immense pride and joy: Terry Sheets, Tifany (Austin) Moody, Mikki Sheets, Justice Sheets, Keifer Sheets, Austin Sheets, Kurt Sheets, and Aliyah Sheets. Laurel also reveled in the blessings of her great-grandchildren-Aria, Mia, Mila, Myla, Terry Jr., Navy, and Remi-who were the light of her life.
Laurel was not only a devoted mother and grandmother but also a cherished sister to her remaining family, including Darlene Ashcraft, Sue (Hank) Blair, Loretta Wynn, Sabrina Craig, and Barbara Howard.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Young and Ione Stucker Howard; her beloved husband, Christopher Sheets; and her dear sons, Mark Sheets and Kurt Sheets, as well as her brothers, Victor Young, Tony Young, and Terry Howard. These losses shaped her journey but never dimmed her loving spirit.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, October 14, 2024 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). Her Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.
