Laurel Lee Tinkle, 77, of Jefferson, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025, at UW Hospital in Madison-on what would have been the celebration of 33 beautiful years with her beloved husband, Terry.
Born August 20, 1947, in Geneva, Illinois, Laurel was the daughter of Delbert and Virginia (Hartman) Schultz. She graduated from Brodhead High School in 1965 and went on to earn both her bachelor's degree in sociology and master's degree in counseling from UW Madison.
As a school counselor, Laurel devoted her professional life to guiding and supporting young people. She also carried this skill into every aspect of her personal life.
Her depth of empathy, unwavering patience, and gift for listening without judgment made her a source of wisdom and comfort for many. Her counsel was quiet but impactful-always thoughtful, always kind.
Laurel embodied grace, warmth, and a strong gentleness that touched every facet of her life. Her kindness, compassion, and spirit enriched both her professional endeavors and the cherished relationships she cultivated with those she loved.
Laurel was a master gardener with a deep appreciation for beauty and growth. She also found joy in traveling, animals (especially her dog Izzy) and giving generously of her time through volunteer work. It was her pleasure to share laughter over games of bridge with dear friends and rummy with her family. Above all, she held her children and grandchildren close to her heart-they were her greatest joy and deepest pride.
Laurel will be remembered for her empathy, thoughtful wisdom, and unique ability to accept others without judgment. Her selflessness and grace made her a shining example of dignity and class.
She will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love and light will continue to shine in the lives of all who knew her.
Laurel is survived by her husband, Terry Tinkle of Jefferson; her children: Elizabeth (Edward) Amstutz of River Forest, IL; Peter (Nicole) Newcomer of Middleton; step-children: Jedediah (Sativa Mata) Tinkle of Sheboygan; Malachi Tinkle of Las Vegas, NV; Tamar (Justin) Kasberg of Missoula, MT; Cana (Colin) Comer of River Hills; Rachel (Jake) Karras of Elkhart Lake; and Ezra (Elizabeth) Ezeli of Waterford.
She is also survived by 19 grandchildren-Nicholas, Emerson, Max, Anja, Azure, Zane, Winter, Fabian, Atreyu, Mazey, Eli, Eva, Remington, Briggs, Ryker, Lake, Sailor, Inez and Ambroz; great grandchildren - Abriela and Ivica.
She is further survived by her siblings: Susan Dixon of Jefferson, Anne Bucalo of McFarland, and Fritz (Jean) Schultz of Brodhead; as well as extended family and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sara Austin; and her beloved daughter, Megan Newcomer (1997), with whom she is now reunited in eternal peace.
A special thank you to all the amazing healthcare providers who cared for her over the years, giving her more time with those she loved and those who loved her.
