Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory1st Sgt. Lauren H. “Al” Alinio, age 91, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2025, after a long battle with cancer and other health challenges. He was a man of great strength, unwavering determination, and lifelong loyalty to those he loved.
1st Sgt. Alinio was born on July 14, 1934, in Binghamton, New York, to Godofredo Alinio and Minnie (Conrow) Alinio.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Iris P. Alinio, and his sister, Delores Latraverse. He is also survived by his four children: Anita Ruitto (Sam), Carol Epperson (Albert), Jesse Hinson (Cheryl), and Jeffrey Hinson (Susan); four grandchildren and their spouses; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his sister, Clarissa Cooke, and by his grandson, Mark Hinson.
Known to his friends as “Al” or “Sarge,” and to his family as “Poppy,” he proudly served 27 years in the United States Army, including service during the Korean War, building a long and distinguished military career. He was known for his leadership, always putting his troops first, and ensuring they were cared for in every way. Following his Army service, he worked for 15 years as a Construction Inspector for PennDOT. He also dedicated 20 years to the Cumberland County Honor Guard and was a committed member of the Carlisle Fish and Game Association for 35 years, where he spent countless hours helping run the skeet range and enjoying his greatest passion—shooting skeet.
If there was ever a man born to be a soldier, it was Poppy. His love for his country and the U.S. Army knew no limits. He was meticulous in his work, whether inspecting bridges or roads or serving his troops, and he always demanded excellence in every task.
Above all, his family came first. He and Iris were always there to help any family member in need, often quietly and without recognition. Though he had a commanding and booming voice, it was always balanced by the steady, calming presence of his wife, Iris.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Cumberland County Honor Guard, 1 Courthouse Square, Carlisle, PA 17013 or the Carlisle Fish and Game Association, 1421 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA 17015.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Hoffman Funeral & Cremation, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, where the family will greet guests after 10:00 a.m. 1st Sgt. Alinio will be laid to rest in Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, at 2:30 p.m. later that day.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers whose care and compassion brought comfort and peace during his journey.
Poppy was deeply loved by many, and he will be missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
