Averine LaVerna Byrd, 72, of Raeford, NC passed away Friday, October 17, 2025 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
LaVerna was born in Fairbanks, Alaska on March 10, 1953 to the late Hilrey Hammac and Averine Grace Teel Hammac. After graduating, she went on to receive her Cosmetology License and was a Hair Stylist for many years working and owning her own business. LaVerna was a dedicated Military Spouse and was in the CB Radio club. She loved Bowling, Knitting, Crocheting, Sewing and loved flowers especially African Violet and Magnolia. She would say,
Don’t Forget My Yokes” and Don’t Judge Me Until You Walk In My Shoes” and her favorite bible verse is John 3:16. Most of all, she loved her family and she will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by siblings, Elmer Teel, Fletcher Hammac, Paul Hammac and Randy Hammac.
She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Kenneth Ray Byrd of the home; children, Diana and Robert Kessler of Ohio, Lee and Jason Fulcher of Georgia, Elaine and Greg Fromer of North Carolina and Hilrey and Jeffrey Hicks of Texas; grandchildren, Jacqueline N. Turk and Robert M.M. Kessler (Mickey), all of Ohio, Cherie F. Clinton, A. Casey Parsons and Jacob H. Fulcher, all of Georgia, Taylor Renee Fromer of Cabanal, Guatamala, Gregory S. Fromer, Eva M. Fromer and Grace A. Fromer, all of North Carolina, Amanda K. Hicks of Texas, Ashley M. Bonds of Missouri, (A.J) Adam J. Hicks of Florida, Lindsey O. Hicks of Texas and many extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be held 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Thursday, November 6, 2025 at LaFayette Funeral Home, 6651 Raeford Road, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
Funeral Services will be 12:00 Noon Friday, November 7, 2025 at LaFayette Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Hoyle officiating.
Burial will follow at 2:00 PM in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, 8220 Bragg Blvd, Fayetteville, NC 28310.
In Lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org/donate/donate in memory of LaVerna Byrd.
