Laverne L. Roy, 84, of Jacksonville, IL passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Springfield Memorial Medical Center. She was born June 19, 1940, the daughter of Jonathan and Lorraine Raymond. She married Dr. Robert Merton Roy Jr. on August 22, 1964, in Chicago and he preceded her in death on November 10, 2021. She is survived by two sons, Brian Roy of South Jacksonville and Jonathan (Jody) Roy of Ripon, WI; two granddaughters, August Roy (Mark) of Kansas and Elizabeth Roy (Alex) of Ripon, WI; and one sister, Janet Raymond (Steve). She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Gail Brito (surviving husband Joe). Laverne attended Northern Illinois University in Dekalb where she met Robert. She began her teaching career in Chicago. Laverne and Robert's sons were born in Chicago, then the family moved to Fort Riley, KS while Robert served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army. In 1976, they moved to Jacksonville. Laverne served as a librarian and substitute teacher in many school districts in the Jacksonville area. She was very community minded, and was active with the Morgan County Extension, 4-H, Passavant Hospital Auxiliary, and the Jacksonville Senior Center. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and quilting and was very involved with many local quilting groups. In 2002, she was commissioned to make a quilt to commemorate Ripon College's 150th anniversary; that quilt is part of the college's permanent art collection. The family will meet friends 2-3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Jacksonville Women's Crisis Center. Condolences may be left at buchanancody.com.
