Lawrence Amster Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carolina Cremation Service - Salisbury on Sep. 19, 2025.
Lawrence "Larry" Richard Amster, of Coram, New York, passed away on May 4th while visiting family in North Carolina. He was 75 years old.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Ellen Prefer-Amster; his children, Rachel, Daniel, and Jason; his extended family, Freddy, Amy, and Hollie; and his beloved grandchildren, Jacob, Jonah, Alexis, Sofia, Charlie, and Miles. He also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, David and Marilyn Amster of Enfield, Connecticut.

Larry's life was a testament to service, creativity, and love. Like his father before him-and his son after-he proudly served his country as a United States Marine from 1969 to 1975, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His commitment to serving others continued well beyond his military years. A lifetime member of the Medford Volunteer Ambulance Company, Larry volunteered as an EMT for 28 years, holding numerous leadership roles including a term as Chief and many years as Commissioner. He also served for more than 17 years as an emergency dispatcher with the North Patchogue Fire Department. His dedication left a lasting impact on the communities he served.

Larry was predeceased by his first wife, Francine Amster, whose untimely passing in 1991 left him to raise their three children on his own. He rose to that challenge with strength and selflessness, offering unwavering support as his children pursued their individual paths. He took special pride in Rachel, who followed in his footsteps as an EMT with Medford Volunteer Ambulance; in Jason, a sailing ship captain whose stories of the sea Larry loved to hear; and in Daniel, who continued the family legacy by serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, also attaining the rank of Sergeant.

A man of many talents, Larry was an artist at heart. For over 40 years, he crafted hand-tufted decorative rugs with care and skill. His love of music and literature enriched his life-he was a devoted fan of Harry Chapin, deeply enjoyed the novels of W.E.B. Griffin, and was a dedicated follower of the television show "The West Wing."

Larry will be remembered for his service, his artistry, and the profound love he held for his family and community. His presence will be deeply missed.

A celebration of life will be held at the Medford Volunteer Ambulance Company Headquarters at 1005 Sipp Avenue, in Medford, NY on Saturday, May 31 st , 2025, from 11AM – 4PM. Friends and acquaintances are warmly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Larry's memory to a local volunteer emergency services organization of your choice.
