Lawrence Gibson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whispering Pines Funeral Home on Feb. 26, 2026.
Lawrence "Dan" Gibson, 73, of Prineville, Oregon, passed away on February 7, 2026.

Dan was born on September 12, 1952, in Oregon City, Oregon, to Harry Gibson and Elnora (Branstuder) Gibson. He graduated from Gladstone High School in 1972, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional and multi-talented athlete.

On the wrestling mat, Dan competed in the 178-pound weight class and built an impressive record throughout his high school career. He earned Most Valuable Player honors in 1970 and 1971 and, in his senior year of 1972, captured the State Championship - a defining achievement that reflected his grit, discipline, and relentless work ethic. Those who watched him wrestle saw not just strength, but heart.

On the football field, Dan was equally dominant. As an all-league offensive and defensive tackle, he earned first-team All-State honors and was recognized as Best Lineman at Gladstone High School. His power and presence earned him the nickname "Dan the Man."

His success led to a football scholarship. Although an athletic injury prevented him from completing his collegiate career, it never diminished his resilience or competitive spirit.

Dan later served as a police officer with the Gladstone Police Department, carrying himself with fairness, strength, and quiet authority. He went on to dedicate 30 years to the Oregon Department of Transportation in highway maintenance at Cascade Locks, retiring in 2003. Hard work was not just something Dan valued - it defined him.

During retirement, Dan worked on a ranch - a season of life he truly loved. He branded cattle, mended fences, and often surprised ranch owners with his strength and determination. Even when injured, he kept going. He had the heart of a cowboy - steady, tough, and loyal.

In 2012, he married Susan "Sue" Hopkins Gibson in Reno, Nevada. Dan often spoke about how grateful he was for Sue - for her steady presence, her loyalty, and the way she stood beside him through everything. He made it known how deeply he appreciated her love and partnership.

Dan loved hunting, fishing, camping, NASCAR, and was a devoted supporter of the Seattle Seahawks. He rooted tirelessly for his favorite NASCAR driver, Kyle Larson, rarely missing a race. He was also a fan of Gunsmoke and would often flip between a race and an episode during slower moments - always wanting to stay busy.

But above all, Dan loved his family. When Dan loved, he loved with his whole heart. He faithfully stayed connected with his daughters through regular calls filled with stories, laughter, and his legendary dad jokes.

A natural storyteller, Dan could hold a room with his humor and timing. His jokes were unforgettable - the kind that made you laugh, groan, and retell them later. His strength, devotion, and larger-than-life presence will be deeply missed.

Dan is survived by his wife, Sue Gibson; his daughters, Dawn Gibson McKim and Angela Gibson LaMarr; his grandchildren, AJ and Taylor; and many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish his love and laughter.

He was preceded in death by his spouse, Deann Gibson; his parents; and two sisters.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
