Lawrence Benjamin Griffin - Affectionally known as "Gamecock Larry."
On December 19, 2024, Lawrence Benjamin Griffin went home to Jesus and to the love of his life Helen (Ginger) Griffin and his loving son, Timothy Baker and bonus son, Jamie Galloway, Great Grandson, Alex Singleton. He was born August 1, 1934, to Henry and Urma Lee Griffin in Orangeburg, SC. He was one of seven children. He is also predeceased by his mother and father; two brothers, Henry and Earl; three sisters, Annie Mae, Lula, and Erma. Lawrence's baby sister, Joyce Orr is his only surviving sibling living.
Lawrence leaves behind two daughters, Carla Baker and Tonya Griffin (Mark); one bonus daughter in law, Lorelle Hodge; two bonus son in laws, Luon Bass, Mark Williams; seven grandchildren, Charity Willis (Kevin), Shauna (Eric) Singleton, Andrew (Katie) Conn, Kayla Bass, Lawrence (Ashley) Bass, Autumn (David) Phegian, Leah (Kyle) Stewman; seventeen Great-Grandchildren, James, Lesleigh, Zaiden, Brayleigh, Lilly, Aubree, Kate, Ryder, Adien, Payten, Lyla, Hudson, Tripp, Gaberial, Willow, Anna Claire, Greyson; and many nephews and nieces.
Lawrence attended Brookland Cayce High School. After he graduated, he joined the Army at age 17, serving two ½ tours in Vietnam. He met the love of his life, through letters. He asked her if she believed in love at no sight and apparently, she did! They married as soon as he came home and was married for 48 years until her passing in 2013. Lawrence was a strong loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was known for his love for the South Carolina Gamecocks, and was known throughout the Gamecock nation as Gamecock Larry, and was a dedicated caller on 107.5, The Game since 2007, rarely missing a day calling in.
The family will receive visitors Friday, December 27, 2024, from 6-8pm at Thompson Funeral Home-Lexington. Funeral Service will be Saturday, December 28, 2024 @ 11am in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home-Lexington. Burial will be held at St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Daniel Sharpe Road near Laird Hills Road Swansea, SC, with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, Lawrence would like donations sent to The Wounded Warriors Walk, and The Cancer Society in honor of our mother, his wife (Ginger).
We love you Daddy-Papa-Big Papa. You will be missed.

"Griff" and I have been friends for over 50 plus years. We first met in when he was my drill sergeant at Fort Gordon in 1968. We reconnected later while we both were stationed in Vietnam. Over the years we have spoken to each other many times a year. When my wife and I would be making the drive south to vacation, we stopped to see Griff on the way. I will really, really miss his southern drawl and laughter. Until we meet again, dear friend.

I have never met "gamecock " Larry. But, when COVID hit in 2020 I would listen to 107.5 every morning and I still listen. Each morning I enjoyed Gamecock Larry and would look forward to hearing his voice and thoughts. There was a time when he did not call in and I called the station to find out if he was all right. They assured me he was. I am saddened for te loss of Gamecock Larry. He will be missed every mornng on 107.5.
