Lawrence M. Hilton was the second child born to Lemuel James and Jessie Causey Hilton in Trenton, New Jersey. He passed away at home on July 2, 2025. He never married and he had no children.
Larry was educated in the Trenton public school system. Music was a huge part of his life from an early age. He played three wind instruments- flute, clarinet and alto saxophone and Larry was mentored by music teacher Mr. Majeski at Jr. High School #1. He even played his saxophone in the Post 93 marching band, during which he entertained Trenton residents in parades a few times a year. Jazz was Larry's favorite genre. He gave support to many musicians and booked artists for years to play at the Candle Light Lounge in Trenton at their Saturday Jazz events. Larry was a major supporter of the Jazz Disciples and they were appreciative of his support.
Larry was a renowned patron of the arts. Artists James Van der Zee, Gordon Parks, Thomas Malloy, Richard Hunt, Selma Burke, Mel Leipzig, Romare Bearden and others influenced Larry greatly and they were his personal friends and many visited Trenton at his request. His extensive art collection included many of their pieces.
Larry, a noted philanthropist, founded The Lawrence M. Hilton Foundation which gave yearly scholarships to students entering college. Long before the foundation was established and throughout his life, he followed his mother Jessie's example and helped anyone that he could. Two AFAR Sober Houses in New Jersey benefitted from his support and there are plaques placed on these buildings in recognition of him. Larry was honored recently for his long-time support of Trenton's Passage Theatre and many individuals have expressed their gratitude to Larry for his generosity and support over many years.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Jessica K. and William Granville, Jr., and niece, Cheryl L. Granville. His survivors include his sister, Karen R. Hilton; cousin, Delores Jenkins; niece, Michelle M. Granville; nephew, William "Billy" Granville (Gretchen); great nephews, Brandon, Life, Zion, Maximus, and Champion Granville; great nieces, Zoee Rodgers (Ryan) and Macy Granville; great great niece, Mia Zambino; and many cousins. Some of the special friends who mourn Larry's passing include Sylvester "Bo" Gore, Karl T. Howell, Herbert Flamer, Marie Rabb, Judge Audrey Blackburn, Jim Gordon, Mel Leipzig, Lamerol Gatewood, Vivian McDuffie, Dr. Wali Rhea, Cheryll Fowler, Marge Caldwell-Wilson, Bryan Papp, Tara Burns, and special mentee artist, Lee Johnson.
There will be no funeral at the request of our beloved Larry.

My deepest condolences to Larry´s family and friends. Larry and I were classmates at Trenton Central High School. We were both often found on the 3rd floor in the music rooms. I later reconnected when he would often visit my brother Pete´s frame shop and art gallery. I would also run into Larry when he visited my neighbor, a noted artist, Mel Leipzig. Rest in peace my friend. You were one of the good guys!
