Lawrence E."Oakie" Joseph passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013. He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Betty Markin Joseph, his loving daughter, Lauren Joseph of Lexington, KY. He was preceded in death by a beloved son, Mark Edward Joseph. Oakie was born in Coal Grove, Ohio, July 11, 1920 the only son of Charles Oakley and Sophia Williams Joseph. He was a graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School where he was an outstanding basketball player for the Hornets. He served his country in the U.S Army Air Corps during WWII. He retired from Allied Chemical after 33 years of service. While employed there he was the Recording Secretary for Local 3687 USWA for 25 years. Oakie was instrumental in the creation of the park in Coal Grove, serving on the park board and spending many hours working on the actual construction of the park. In addition to his parents and son he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, James and Dorothy Price, his father and mother-in-law, Jason and Sadie Markin. Oakie was a kind and generous man known for his quick wit and great sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be 2:00P.M. Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Phillips Funeral Home 1004 South 7th Street Ironton, Ohio with Brad Jenkins Pastor of the Memorial Methodist Church officiating, the church Oakie attended. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00P.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
