Lawrence H. King 1930 – 2025
Lawrence H. King, a Johnstown, NY native and longtime resident of Schenectady, NY, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, just a few days before his 95th birthday. His wife Maryde was with him, and he was under the excellent care of the staff of Wells Nursing Home in Johnstown when he passed.
Known to friends and family as Larry, he was born in Johnstown in 1930 and graduated from Johnstown High School in 1948. From there, he went to work at General Electric on a 4-year program for laboratory assistants in Schenectady. During this time, Larry expanded his interests in the outdoors and became active in the Schenectady chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club and Schenectady Photographic Society.
An avid photographer, Larry captured the wild beauty of the flora and fauna of the Adirondack Mountains with his camera. He was honored with several awards by the Schenectady Photographic Society and several photographs were featured as the "Picture of the Month" by the Schenectady Gazette in the 1960s.
It was in the Adirondack Mountain Society where Larry and Maryde's love story began, leading to their extraordinary wedding at Deer Leap overlooking Lake George (the bride wore hiking boots) and a marriage that lasted 55 years. They settled down on Myron Street in Schenectady, but it could be said they never slowed down; the pair could be seen cycling all around Schenectady and Niskayuna together in warm weather or snowshoeing in the cold, attending the opera, leading hiking excursions, and always working together to make their world a better place.
Larry led a life of service, notably to the Society for the Protection of the Adirondacks, the Bridge Center of Schenectady, and as a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown, NY.
Larry is survived by his wife Maryde Fahey King, daughter-in-law Linda Orr, granddaughter Amy Orr and her husband Jason Wilkie, and Larry was the proud great grandpa of their daughter, Miranda.
There will be a celebration of life for Larry at the First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown, NY on Thursday, June 19 at 1:00 pm.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown, NY.

So sorry to hear about the passing of my great Uncle Larry. While sadly I have not seen him in many years, I will always remember my childhood Thanksgivings spent exploring nature by bike around Ocean City, Maryland with Uncle Larry & Aunt Maryde leading the way on their tandem bicycle.
