Lawrence Lyle Lehman of Redford Township, Michigan, passed away at the age of 79 on September 25, 2025. He was born on July 10, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan to the late Clarence and Frances Lehman. Lawrence is survived by his daughter, Laura Lehman, as well as his brother-in-law David Bailey, his nieces, Kathryn (Alicia) Bailey, and Elizabeth Bailey, great-nephew Jayson Woolf; nieces Kathleen (Donald) Addison, Victoria (George) Skupin, and Jacqueline McCullum; nephews David Gorney, John (Amanda) McCullum, Brandon (Beverly) Lehman, and many other great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 43 years Maureen Lehman, his sisters Jean Anderson, Diane Winiecki, and Judith McCullum; his brother Keith Lehman, his sisters-in-law Lilia Lehman, Barbara Bailey, and Michelle Bailey; as well as his brother-in-law Stacy McCullum, and his nieces Marsha Anderson, Colleen Hayes, and Ileen Buruca-Rodriguez.
Lawrence graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in his youth. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S. Little Rock during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Italy for some time during the four years he served. After returning from the Navy, Lawrence worked at a few short-term jobs, eventually landing a job at River Rouge Power Plant as a power plant operator. After working there for several years, Lawrence became an officer in the Utility Workers Union of America, representing employees who worked in the fields of public utilities, especially electricity. He did many arbitrations, where he was the union representative defending employees who believed they had been wrongly terminated. Whether the employee was in the right or in the wrong, Lawrence represented them to the best of his ability, similar to a defense attorney. Lawrence served in a volunteer capacity for many years on the board of the Detroit Edison Employees Credit Union, now known as Lake Trust Credit Union.
After Lawrence retired in 2006, he had more time for hobbies like golf and reading. He played in two golf leagues at the same time for several years. His mobility issues had prevented him from golfing for some time. In earlier years, he attended drum corps competitions as a hobby. Lawrence loved reading novels, especially those by Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler. It was a tradition for him to receive either books or Barnes and Noble gift cards for birthdays and holidays. He also loved action movies and war movies (the louder the better). He loved watching TV, especially crime dramas, but also more unique shows such as "Dancing With the Stars" and "Glee." He watched all types of sports on TV, including figure skating and gymnastics, and he was very fond of the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings. Lawrence was fond of his computer games, and had about $800 million in fake money in his casino game. He also had sudoku puzzles and the lottery as part of his daily routine.
Lawrence was known for his kind and loving nature, ability to tell jokes, and his cooking. He prepared many Christmas Eve dinners over the years in his home, as well as cooking most dinners during his marriage. He had lost his parents and all of his siblings several years, and had lost his wife, Maureen just the month before his death. He had experienced a steep physical decline since his wife's death and his body was beginning to fail him. He is now free of his earthly body and reunited with his departed loved ones. He will be dearly missed by those of us still here.
