Lawrence Lynn Lyndaker, 61, died Monday, January 15, 2024 from a devastating fire that consumed the garage at his residence on William Street in Croghan.
The last of eight children, Larry was born to Ralph M. and Margie A. Lehman Lyndaker on December 31, 1962. He grew up on a farm on the Briot Road, outside Croghan, later moving into the village with his family. He graduated in 1981 from Beaver River Central, where he was a proud member of the basketball team under legendary Coach Bob Giordano.
Larry was employed as a finishing carpenter for various construction companies until he found his niche driving truck for Farney Feed Mill (later, Cows R Us) in Croghan. After this concern closed, Larry began his 23-year employment with the Lewis County transfer site in Lowville, a job he thoroughly enjoyed.
For many years, Larry held a second job milking cows for Bob & Valerie Keefer on their Briot Road farm, the same farm that had once been Larry's home. "After our barn fire he helped us rebuild for months. That encouragement kept us putting one foot in front of the other. He often had a good story to tell from his day and a smile to help put my worries aside. In my mind I can see him doing a little jig down the barn floor to whatever song was on the radio. How he loved his music & dancing!"
Larry truly never met a stranger, whether it was helping someone unload and carry their garbage while at work or two-stepping and waltzing to the music from his favorites: The Nelson Brothers Band, The Patti Stanford Band and The Adirondack Playboys (The Streeters). He knew everyone and he liked them all; accolades on social media tell of how others liked him in return.
Larry not only loved dancing and music, but also camping, especially at Long Point. He went on bus trips with his wife to NYC and Lancaster, which they returned to frequently on their own. In his younger days, Larry was very involved in fastpitch softball. He was a long-time member of Emmaus Bible Fellowship, Maple Ridge Center, Lowville.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, his dancing partner, his Sweet Thing, his Cinderella, Cindy Waugh and four children: his daughter Amanda L. Lyndaker, Peoria Heights, Il.; his son John Anthony Lyndaker and wife Alexis, New Bremen; Whitney Waugh, Lowville; Jennah Smith, Adams Center. Others surviving Larry are his siblings: Wilmer (Sonny) & Jo-Ann Lyndaker, Croghan; Bruce & Pamela Lyndaker, Lowville; Fern Herzig, New Bremen; Emerson & Kimberly Lyndaker, Beaver Falls; Bill & Valerie Bush, Croghan; Anita Lyndaker, Beaver Falls; Joe (Barry) & Holly Lyndaker, New Bremen; also two uncles of Delaware, his Waugh sisters-and-brothers-in-law, cousins, and so many treasured nieces and nephews, both by blood and by marriage.
Papa's heart belonged to Clayton Lawrence & Cora Holly Lyndaker, along with Lincoln & Liam Lortie, and Mckenzie, Ryker and Olivia Barney. Along with his parents, Larry was predeceased by his brother Michael D. in 2021 and brother-in-law Douglas Herzig in 2019.
Larry's memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the Croghan Mennonite Church, Kirschnerville at 1:00 pm. A family calling hour will be at 10:00, with general visitation beginning at 11:00. A light luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall.
Larry's arrangements are being taken care of by a dear Friend of the Lyndaker family, David Sundquist of Sundquist Funeral Home, Lowville. Donations can be made to: Croghan Fire Department, P.O. Box 405, Croghan, NY 13327; Emmaus Bible Fellowship, 5571 Highland Avenue, Lowville, NY 13367 or the Beaver River Booster Club, Beaver River Central, Beaver Falls, NY 13305. Larry didn't know who I was other than someone who came to the dump weekly. Well one day I parked at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the office and when I went back down to my truck it wouldn't start. So I went back up and told Larry (I didn't know his name but just knew he was a friendly guy) that my truck had died and was partially blocking the dump entrance. He immediately came down to see if he could figure out why my truck wouldn´t start and called in several other men to see if they could figure it out. We quickly decided it wasn't the battery and someone even got underneath the truck to see if they could figure it out. I called and had the truck towed and it turned out to be the starter so there would have been no way to fix it at the dump.
The other thing I remember about Larry is that I always felt better after paying him for my garbage since he was always smiling and friendly. He could see that I was older and not a large woman so when I brought in my garbage I had to bring in 2 bags with only enough weight for me to carry. I thought I'd have to pay for 2 bags but he could tell that my garbage would hardly fill one large bag so he insisted that I only pay for 1 bag. I will definitely miss seeing his smile when I go to the dump.
