Lawrence Rutan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bradley Funeral Home - Marlton on Oct. 22, 2025.
Rutan, Lawrence R., passed away suddenly on October 19, 2025. He was 82 years old and still living life to the fullest. If you knew Lawrence Rutan, you called him Larry. And once you met him, he was your friend. His winning smile, generous spirit, huge heart and steadfast faith were pillars of his character. His life was full of faith, service, family and friends. His family were the people he loved the most and the best. He is the loving husband of Beverly Castle Rutan. Devoted father of Lawrence 'Chip' Rutan and his wife, Ali, and Jeneen Schlotterbeck and her husband, Michael. Dearly loved Pops of Tim Rutan, Sam Rutan, Kelly Rutan (D.J.), Evan Schlotterbeck, Matt Schlotterbeck and Chris Timasonravichkit and loving Great Grandpop to his great granddaughter, Izzy. Dear brother-in-law of Ed and Cathy O'Donnell and brother-in-law Richard and Joanne DeMayo. He is survived and loved by Beverly's children; Brianna Strater, Albert Strater and Travis Strater and his family. Larry began this loving legacy of family with his first wife, the late Joanne Rutan (nee DeMayo).
Larry was a graduate of Haddonfield High School and a veteran of the US Army. He graduated from Georgia Tech with his Bachelor's degree and began his working career as an Electrical Engineer at a firm in Philadelphia. He then got his Teaching Certificate and Master's degree in Education at Rowan College as God led him to pursue a teaching career. He went on to teach Math at Maple Shade High School for over 30 years where he made lifelong friendships and touched many students' lives. He raised his family in Cherry Hill and Larry was involved in the community and his church. He enjoyed his handyman business which he did on the side when he wasn't teaching. This was just the beginning of Larry's desire to help others. The foundation for that came from his faith in the Lord. He was actively involved in many ministries in his church and served as a Deacon, most recently at Crossroads Church of Shamong. He went above and beyond in whatever he was doing. His faithful servant's heart motivated most everything he did. The consummate volunteer, Larry also loved to fish (even when he didn't catch a thing), crossword puzzles, and adventures. Even in his late 70's, he learned to kayak so he and Beverly could enjoy it together.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for a visitation and a Celebration of Larry's life. The visitation will be held on Saturday November 22, 2025 from 9-10am at Crossroads Church of Shamong 445 Oakshade Road Shamong NJ 08008 where a Memorial Celebration will be held at 10am.

We had the good fortune of becoming Larry and Joanne`s neighbors in 1970. Larry was someone that you instantly liked. We have fond memories of happy times shared with them throughout the years until 1985 when we moved to California. Larry was the epitome of kindness and grace and to know him was to love him. We were deeply saddened upon hearing the news of his passing. We extend our deepest condolences to Beverly, Chip, Jeneen and to his entire family.

Mr. Rutan was one of the best educators I ever had. He was one of my inspirations for becoming a math teacher.

If you remember taking his Algebra class, he had a quadratic formula song that he created while in college. He used to play it from his cassette tape. I had the pleasure of redoing the song with a friend of mine in college. Every year when I taught quadratics to my students, I made sure to sing his song and keep the tradition alive.

Thank you for impacting so many lives, Mr. Rutan...especially mine.

Mr. Rutan crosses my mind often, especially when I sing the "Quadratic Formula" song to my kids when they are struggling with their math homework! I have fond memories of his big smile and warm heart. He was one of the most genuine teachers I have been fortunate enough to learn from. He loved his students and even kept encouraging us even after we left MSHS. I even remember a time he had a conference at the university I attended and we met for lunch in the student center, just for him to make sure I was adjusting well to the different pace of the classes (mostly calculus)! He was kind and energetic, danced in the aisles of his classroom and even made Math Team competitions a blast! He was and will always be a star in my eyes. God bless you, Mr. Rutan. May you shine your smile upon us from above.

As a teacher, in the summer during professional development, there are often moments of reflection where you are asked what teacher in your life inspired you- made you want to become an educator. Mr Rutan is ALWAYS someone who comes top of mind. I sat in his classroom 23 years ago and still have so many great memories. He made me LOVE math rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to all who knew Mr. Rutan. Mr. Rutan was my math teacher at Maple Shade High School in the 90´s. He was such a wonderful person. I still remember the quadratic formula song he taught my class and have sang it to my children to help them remember it as well. He will be missed.

One of my favorite teachers who truly cared for each student. My favorite memory of Mr Rutan was when he shared a story with me years after graduating HS when he said "Furph, I never saw a student get Seniorsitis as early as you".

He was one of the best teachers at MSHS

Thank you Mr Rutan, I will see you again!
