Lawrence Alphus Tolbert, 90, husband of 58 years to the late Cordelia “Delie” Black Tolbert, died on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Born in Lula, GA on August 18, 1935, he was the son of the late Okie Lamar Tolbert and Obelia Booth Tolbert. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Guthrie and Bob Pratt. He graduated from Oglethorpe County High School.
Lawrence worked 57 years as a mechanic for DJ Jeep, Heyward Allen, Hattaway Motors Pontiac. After leaving dealerships, he and Jimmy Coile opened Tolbert and Coile Garage of West Broad Street. After several years, Lawrence built and ran Tolbert’s Garage in Hull, GA. He taught Paint and Body night classes at Athens Tech. He also drove a school bus for Madison County School System for over 10 years.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law: Michael and Missy Tolbert of Danielsville; grandsons: Clayton, Matt and Will Tolbert of Danielsville; sister: Leeneda Thomas of Booklet; nieces and nephews: Cindy (Karl) Collins, Andrew (Tina Andrews) Thomas, Jim (Myra) Pratt, Laurie (Jose’ Chavez) Pratt; fourteen great nieces and nephews and four great great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at 5PM at Hull Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 3PM until 5PM prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
