GILFORD, NH ---- formerly of Waban, MA and Revere, MA ---- Lee Anthony Duncan (Kayo), 82, passed away, suddenly on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at his home.
Lee was born, August 14, 1941, in Boston, Ma., and was the beloved son of Dr. Christopher Duncan and Virginia (Costello) Duncan.
Lee attended private schools in his younger years, and graduated from Newton High School, Class of 61. He then entered Boston College. However, after two years he decided to leave college to join the military. After training, Lee was selected as a member of the 5th Special Forces Green Beret A Team in Vietnam. Upon his return from the service, it was then that he met his loving wife of 55 years, Maureen Cowan Duncan.
Lee was an avid skier, loved his motorcycle trips with the boys, snowmobiling, his boat, Dun Rowin, and his trips to Maine with his family. As their most dedicated fan, Buckee could be found, rain or shine, cheering on his grandchildren and their teams at all of their games. And in the morning, you could always find Lee having breakfast with the boys!!!
Lee served as Commodore of the Glendate Yacht Club, Co-Chair on the Town of Gilford Conversation Commission and on the Board of the former Youth Services.
He worked at Metz Electronics and MEC Communication, as VP of Operations Manager. Upon retiring, he worked at Irwin Motors part time.
Lee is survived by his wife, Maureen, his daughter Kimberlee Duncan Reich and her husband, Michael of Bedford, NH; his brother Clarke Duncan and his wife Rennie of North Andover, MA; his sister, Joan Duncan Loring and her husband Richard of Norfolk, MA; brother-in-law, James Cowan of Newburyport, MA; grandchildren, Meredith and Duncan Reich of Bedford, NH; godchildren, Anne Duncan Rogan of Foxboro, MA and Aaron Nelson of Walpole, MA and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lee is predeceased by his brothers Christopher Duncan, Paul Duncan and his wife Joan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 26, 2024, at 10:00 am at St. Andre Bessette Parish – Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Avenue, Laconia, NH

In 2022, the Gilford Board of Selectmen honored Lee by dedicating the Town's Annual Report in his honor. I was proud to put together the following narrative for all the world to see:

The Gilford Board of Selectmen is pleased to dedicate the 2022 Annual Report to Lee Anthony Duncan in recognition of his retirement from the Conservation Commission after 30 years of distinguished service and volunteerism.

Lee was born in Newton, Massachusetts in 1941, where he grew up and graduated from high school. One of his earliest childhood memories is standing up in a convertible during a parade celebrating the end of World War II and thinking everyone had come out in honor of his birthday.

He then attended Boston College for a couple of years before deciding to enlist in the Army in 1963. He served his country in the special forces as a Green Beret while stationed in Okinawa and Vietnam. Lee still attends his unit reunions whenever possible, but laments the fact that his group of colleagues is growing smaller all the time.

After his discharge from the Army, Lee moved to the family vacation home in Gilford in 1968 where he soon thereafter met his future bride Maureen, from Revere, MA, who was also staying at her family vacation home in Gilford. They have been happily married living in Gilford since 1969 and they have a daughter who is a school teacher and two grandchildren.

Lee´s post-Army career began as a Controller for Trapper Brown Corporation and ended as a Vice-President for Metz Electronics and Metz Communications. At some point in 1992, Lee let his friend John Goodhue talk him into joining the Conservation Commission where he ended up as Vice-Chair until his recent retirement in 2022. On December 20, 2022, the Conservation Commission presented Lee with an engraved captain´s chair in appreciation of his service.

Some of his other volunteer duties included serving on the Board for the Youth Services Court Diversion Program, being a proud member of the Lake Winnipesaukee Association and a long-term member of the Glendale Yacht Club.

These days Lee still spends his time boating and skiing when he can, but his favorite pastime is watching his grandchildren at their sporting events. It is people like Lee Duncan who make the Gilford community a special place. Thank you Lee!

He was a great guy and I am very sorry to learn of his passing.

Lee was special. He was brave, genuine and one of the most caring people I knew. He also was very smart! He knew a lot about a lot! I willl never forget the day Lee saved Mark Island from burning down after I accidentally set it on fire. He was THE ONLY person out of about 40 that jumped into action and saved the day. He will never be forgotten! Love you Lee!
