Lela Louise Burns, 87, of Niles, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, in her home. Lela was born on July 13, 1936 in Lee County, Arkansas to Carroll and Maggie Bell (Rose) Brown. She had been employed with the former S.S. Kresge and The Marianne Shop at Town County in Mishawaka, Indiana. She also worked for 1140 Cafe on Western Avenue. On November 17, 1951 in Marianna, Arkansas she married Billy Gene Burns, who survives and just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Lela is also survived by five daughters, Margie (Mike) Milewski of South Bend, Indiana, Patsy Onderdonk of Arkansas, Charlotte (Roger) Barclay of South Bend, Indiana, Brenda Pierce of Niles, Michigan and Sandra (Brooks) Nolan of Arkansas; two sons, William (Carol Zernick) Burns and David Mikel Burns both of South Bend Indiana; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; 9 great great-grandchildren; one sister, Callie (Austin) Casteel of Arkansas; and two brothers, Carroll (Nancy) Brown, Jr. of Arkansas and George Jimmy (Brenda) Brown of Arkansas. Lela was preceded in death by her parents Carroll and Maggie Brown; grandson Anthony Belich and granddaughter Melissa Barclay; one sister, Lucille Fowler; and one brother WD Brown. Visitation will be held at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, from 10:00 am to noon, Tuesday, November 28th with Funeral Services following immediately after. Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles, Michigan. Lela was born and raised in Lee County, Arkansas. Then moved to Mishawaka, Indiana, where she raised her children and enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher at Twin City Baptist Church. After retiring she enjoyed working side by side with her husband in the garden and doing lawn work. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, and visiting with friends at Hardee's. She enjoyed entertaining family and guests to a cup of coffee and a plate of food. Memorial Contributions may be donated to Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana.
