Lela Gail Melton, née Prater, known fondly as Gail by her friends and loved ones, passed away of natural causes on the 1st of November, 2025, in Chicago, IL. Born on February 11, 1937, in Cedar Lake, IN, Gail infused the lives of those she encountered with her bright spirit for 88 fulfilling years. Gail's passion and silly nature brought laughter to many. You could say she was a real hoot!
Gail was a graduate of Crown Point High School, Class of 1956. She helped raise her younger siblings and worked many jobs in her long and storied life. Throughout her life, she held a deep faith as an active member of the Methodist community, which guided her steps and provided her with immense comfort.
Surviving Gail are her children Vicky (Darrell) Ross and Kerry (Dennis) Rush, grandchildren, Andrew Ross and Corey (Katie) Ross, great-grandchildren Logan and Preston. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters, Ann and Yuvon, who shared many treasured memories with their dear sibling. Gail's presence will be profoundly missed, yet her legacy is visible in the lives of those she loved.
Gail's vibrant passions and hobbies included a dedicated practice of collecting and crafting dolls, an activity that not only showcased her artistic talent but also brought her immense joy. She also loved puzzling and reading cowboy romance novels. The hours spent with her family and her granddog Britney, were the ones she cherished most.
Gail will be remembered for her loyalty to family and friends, as well as for her humor and passion. The memory of Lela Gail Melton, née Prater, will be eternally treasured by all who were blessed to know.
