Leland Alan “Jack” Chapoose, age 40, of Ballard, Utah passed away on January 6, 2025.

Leland was born in Roosevelt, Utah and grew up living in Fort Duchesne, Utah.

Jack attended Todd Elementary, West Jr. High, and graduated from Uintah River High School. He played basketball, ran cross country and was the Salutatorian of his graduating class.

Following graduation, he attended Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) in Rangely, CO graduating with his Associates Degree. While attending CNCC, he was part of the Men's Cross Country team with two of his brothers, Charley and Jason. All three brothers competed in the National Junior College Cross Country Championships in El Paso, Texas representing the CNCC Spartans and the Ute Indian Tribe. After graduating from CNCC, he attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO and worked for Weeminuche Construction from Towaoc, CO. During his work with Weeminuche Construction, he helped in the construction of the Lake Knighthorse Dam.

After returning home, he worked at the Ute Plaza as a "stalker" (haha) and he also helped in the bakery and deli. He then worked with Redhand Oil Field Services for many years. Before going out to the field he would handle business always wearing his bow tie and clean FR's because in his words "you always had to look professional".

Jack had many pastimes, from hunting and camping to playing basketball and golf. He was also competitive in everything he did. He played in many basketball tournaments throughout Indian Country, earning championships, all-stars and MVP awards. His greatest love was golf, traveling to various golf tournaments and playing different courses throughout his travels. He golfed in many Native tournaments and even played courses in Hawaii. One of his greatest achievements in golf was qualifying for the Utah State Pro-Am in 2015. He enjoyed golfing throughout the week any chance he got, sometimes golfing 36 holes or more. He would also talk about playing "skins" on Sunday with the U&O Golf Club. Sometimes he would take a break from golfing on Sundays to watch Sunday NFL football games. Jack loved watching football, college and NFL. You can be sure if the New York Giants were playing, he would be watching, however, his man crush was Tom Brady.

Jack was very giving and very caring. He was a Sundancer and a member of the LDS church. He loved to "coach", always offering advice to his nephews and niece. He would also "coach" anyone in golf and basketball whether they would listen to him or not. Jack liked to cook and loved bacon. When talking to Jack you would have to watch your words and end any conversation with "non-sexually" and he would end with "Oot". He was a hard worker and had a strong work ethic. His siblings would often call him Spongebob because he was always ready to work. In years past, we could always count on Jack helping family pack out any animal no matter how far away from the road it was. Once he put on his ghillie suit, he would keep it on for the duration of the hunt, no matter how sweaty he got. It would be quite the game night when Band Hero came out, Jack was the main drummer for the "Elastic Waist Band". He was also our songbird, randomly calling and asking what we wanted to hear, then he'd sing that to us. Some of his favorites were Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi and Linkin Park.

Jack was a beloved brother, son, nephew, uncle, grandson, cousin and friend. We will deeply miss our Jack Nasty.

Leland is survived by his Brother: Curtis Chapoose (Jamie), Fort Duchesne, UT; Sisters: Lynnise Chapoose, Yellowstone Subdivision: Ciana Chapoose, Yellowstone Subdivision; Robin Chapoose, Eagle Butte, SD; Adopted Sister, Taitum DeGarmo, Fort Hall, ID; Parents: Robert Chapoose Jr. (Vodne), Yellowstone Subdivision; Bernice Mescale (John), Sprague, Washington; Step Siblings: Allen Eagleson, Spokane WA; Kayla Eagleson, Vanburen, AR; 6 Nephews, 3 Nieces, numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.
