Leo Emerson DeGroat Jr., age 80, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2026, at McLaren Bay Region in Bay City, MI. He was born on August 7, 1945, in Saginaw, MI to Leo and Marie (Guy) DeGroat Sr. He lived in St. Helen, MI for many years.
Leo married Dorothy Jenkins on March 14, 1964, the love of his life. They were inseparable through life.
Leo retired in 1999 from Saginaw Steering Gear, where he was a proud member of the United Auto Workers Local 699. His career was one of steadfast hard work and loyalty, values he carried with him throughout his life.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Leo was a man who cherished the simple joys of life. He found great pleasure in hunting, fishing, and golfing—a pastime in which he achieved a memorable milestone, scoring a hole-in-one at Birch Pointe Golf Club in St. Helen. An avid Green Bay Packers fan, his enthusiasm for the game was both genuine and contagious, often sparking spirited conversations and camaraderie.
Leo's is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy DeGroat; his brother, Fred DeGroat; his sisters, Sunday Geiser and Pam Saenz; and nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Scott DeGroat, and daughter, Jennifer Victoria DeGroat, as well as his parents. He was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters, whose memory he honored throughout his lifetime.
Visitation will be held at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in St. Helen on Monday, April 6, 2026, from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 PM. Burial will be at Denton Township Cemetery in Prudenville, MI.
