Leo William "Bill" Geneser, 89, a lifelong resident of Granger, IA passed to his eternal home on Wednesday, February 16, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger, where the family will receive friends from 9 - 11 a.m. before services. Cremation will follow services and private inurnment will be at Beaver Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
Bill was born May 31, 1932 in Granger to Leo Francis and Helen Marie (Deheck) Geneser, and graduated from Assumption Catholic School in 1949. Bill played baseball and basketball while growing up and thoroughly enjoyed watching any sport as long as a ball was involved. Following military service as a Radio Operator in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Bill returned home and started farming west of Granger. He married Dolores Mary Mataya on April 16, 1955 and together raised their five children Gary, Lorraine (David) Nixon, Perry (Rebecca), Joseph (Judy) and Chris (Lisa). Bill quit working in 1977 when he purchased the Grimes Elevator, followed by the Granger and Polk City elevators soon thereafter. He truly enjoyed his time talking with friends and customers and never considered his time at the elevator as work. Bill never met a golf course he didn't like but just to make sure, Bill and Dolores enjoyed 64 wonderful years traveling together, playing cards and golfing with friends and family all around the US.
Bill is survived by his younger brother Joseph D. Geneser of Naples, FL; his five children; his 17 grandchildren; Jeremy (Leslie) Nixon, Sarah (Colby) Springer, Ashley (Robert) Hontz, Ashley (Levi) Keech, Emily (Doug) Schroeder, Jerilyn Geneser, Andrew Nixon, Josh (Michelle) Geneser, Luke (Valerie) Geneser, Michael (Katherine) Geneser, Daniel (Taylor) Geneser, Tristen Peterson, Riley Geneser, Natalie Geneser, Jerome Geneser, Leo Geneser, and Peter Geneser; his 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dolores, his parents, older siblings John "Jack" Geneser and Frances Wade.
The Geneser family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Mary Gonzalez who was a wonderful companion for Dolores, a friend, and had the arduous task of keeping Bill's Arizona house in order. Bill will always be remembered for his sharp mind, quick wit and sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family for later dispersal to charities. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
