Thomaston – Leo Roland Lafontaine, 81, passed away due to complications of pneumonia at St. Mary's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Helena R. (Rotella) Lafontaine for 50 years.
Leo was born in Waterbury on December 5, 1943, son of the late Roland and Eva (Landry) Lafontaine. Raised in Waterbury, he was a graduate of St. Anne's Grammar School and Sacred Heart High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was a district manager at the Waterbury Republican American for over twenty years. Leo had worked as a carpenter and went on to retire from Cly-Del manufacturing where he had worked as a machinist.
He will be remembered for his love of bowling, golf and most important his love for his family. Before his illness, he and his wife enjoyed traveling across this beautiful country. He was an active communicant of the Shrine of St. Anne where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and worked the St. Annes Bingo for many years, working the floor and teasing the players and making everyone laugh, when needed he filled in calling numbers at Bingo. He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an avid NY Yankee and UConn basketball fan.
In addition to his wife Helena, he is survived by two sons, Brian L. Lafontaine of Thomaston and Jason R. Lafontaine and his wife, Erin of Shelton; his sister-in-law, Lena Lafontaine of Queensbury, NY and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Matthew and brothers, Marcel, Roger and Andre.
The family would like to thank Leo's caretaker for the last few years, Louise Ritter, for her compassion, wonderful care and delightful company she provided him over the years. They would also like to thank the staff members at St Mary's Hospital ER and ICU departments for the wonderful care, compassion and attention the nurses and doctors gave to Leo.
A Mass of Christian burial will be on Monday, January 20, at the Shrine of St. Anne (All Saints/Todos Los Santos Parish) 515 S. Main St. Waterbury. Burial will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of St. Anne Restoration Fund 515 S. Main Street Waterbury, CT 06706.
