Leo R. Lauretano, DMD, age 74, a longtime and cherished resident of Winchester, passed away on October 30, 2025 after bravely fighting a brief illness. Leo was the beloved husband of 38 years of his wife Cheryl and the best father imaginable to his children Katie and Michael.
Born in Somerville, MA, Leo was the son of the late Cosmo and Margaret (Ardito) Lauretano. As a young child, Leo and his family moved to Winchester where he would soon become a fixture of the community, attending Winchester High School and Boston College.
Leo shared his lifelong love of music with all those who knew him, playing guitar in many bands throughout his life such as the Wages, Gunga and the Dins, and Backburner. The ideal band mate, Leo was happy holding down rhythm or take the lead and would often close out shows with a masterful rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing." Not surprisingly, Leo remained lifelong friends with many of his bandmates.
In addition to music, Leo loved spending his time on the tennis court. Leo learned tennis as a child on the Packer Ellis Tennis Courts in Winchester, and throughout his life continued to play with his family and friends as a member of the Winchester Tennis Association, an organization he loved dearly.
A graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Leo provided compassionate dental care to generations over a 49 year career in Winchester. Leo loved his patients and felt it was a privilege to care for those in his community.
Leo was the embodiment of kindness. He brought joy to all those around him, especially his family. He found pleasure in the simplest things- watching birds on the beach in Falmouth, looking for critters in the Aberjona on his lunch break, and sharing some chips and salsa with his family. He once said his children were the joy of his life, and he would have cherished every coo and smile of his new granddaughter Caroline.
In addition to his wife, Cheryl, Leo is lovingly survived by his children: Katherine "Katie" Cole and her husband Matt of Andover and their daughter Caroline, and Michael Lauretano and his wife Danielle of Bedford.
He was also the dear brother of Ralph Lauretano, Sr. and his wife Marie of Winchester, Sandra Hartzler and her late husband Glen of Reading, and Carol Lauretano of Winchester.
He is further survived by a sister-in-law Sandra Loughran and her husband Bernard of Belmont and was the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews: Mark Hartzler and his wife Nancy, Eric Hartzler, Ralph John Lauretano, Jr. and his wife Michelle, Charles Lauretano, Stephanie Johansen (Loughran) and her husband Michael, Patrick Loughran and his wife Bridget, and Kerry Loughran., and he was also the great-uncle of Emily and Gianna Lauretano.
Funeral Services are private at this time. Leo's family is planning a Celebration of Life for family and friends to be held at a later date in the Spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Leo's memory may be made to the Winchester Tennis Association, c/o Chrissy Bordonaro, 8 Viking Road, Winchester, MA 01890.

Earlier today

Just returned from a two week trip when I read that Leo had passed away.

I met Leo on at the Packard outdoor tennis courts about 10 years ago when I started to play the sport. I was immediately impressed by the quality of his play especially for someone approaching his retirement years. I told myself that I wanted to play like him.

After many doubles matches playing with Leo and against him I realized that he was much more than a role model on the tennis court but also a kind, generous, considerate person whose values where those to admire and emulate. Leo must have been a great husband for his lovely wife, Cheryl, and their children.

Although tennis is no longer an important activity for me anymore I will always remember Leo as one the most gentle souls I have met all these years in Winchester. My deepest sympathy and heart felt condolences to Cheryl and her children.

Yesterday

I was in two bands with Leo: the Winchester High School Band and Gunga and the Dins. In our second band I really came to know and appreciate Leo as an outstanding guitarist and as an outstanding person. When I was back in Winchester from San Diego for several months in 2015 taking care of my father, Leo spent some quality time with me and Cheryl helped me in my search for a nursing home placement. May Leo rest in peace. May Cheryl and their family live in peace and in hope.

Leo was one of the first people I met when I moved to Winchester in 1979. Of course, we met at the Packer Courts on one of those wonderful Spring evenings after work. We bonded over cars (his Porsche may have been the worst model that company produced) and our mutual love of music.
Leo´s calm demeanor, smile and smooth backhand were only outdone by his curiosity and good humor. It has been almost 30 years since we moved, and I have nothing but fond memories of Leo. My heartfelt condolences to Cheryl and family.

I'm devastated by the loss of my good friend, music advisor and band member from the earliest days of our musical journeys. In 1965 Leo and I took our guitars to my parents basement on Middlesex Street in Winchester..Leo with a Harmony, me with a Zimm-Garr...an Asian model with about a 1" action. We played the first notes of "Satisfaction" and were convinced we could do anything. We found a drummer, Paul Vinci, a bass player, Dave Poole and a singer, George Greenwich. We practiced in my basement, then Dave's basement, then Leo's basement, and finally the 3rd floor of Paul Vinci's home. Our parents were wonderfully tolerant of the noise we made. Over time, we added Jackie Busook and Joey Tambone to our little band...and we had so much fun.
For the last 60 years we've kept in contact, even though we were 1000 miles apart. In the last few years before his passing we frequently discussed songs, and setlists and guitar tones...and memories of the past. Since his passing not a day has gone by when I haven't thought "I wonder what Leo thinks of this song..." and would be ready to send a text. We shared so many important and early wonderful memories. Leo had a capacity to make you feel good about yourself..always smiling always positive...always able to make you know that he was really listening and caring. Leo I miss you and love you so much.

I am so saddened to hear about Leo. I have such fond memories playing mixed doubles with him after I graduated college as well as just seeing him at the clay courts and swim club. He was such a caring soul. Every time I went to have my teeth cleaned he would always ask about my kids. I hope he's up there playing tennis with my dad. My thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Lauretanos, the Towfigh family is so deeply sorry for the loss of beloved Dr Leo. For more than 30 years he has not only taken wonderful care of our teeth and gums, he has been a beloved friend and an inspiration to us. Be it talking about music, trading insider information on where to see the peregrine falcons (behind Armstrong Ambulance!), or joking around, we always left the dentist happier (and with shinier, healthier teeth). My Dad who passed away in 2019 absolutely adored Dr Leo, and I have no doubt they are telling jokes right now in Heaven. Thank you, Dr Leo, and thank you to all the Lauretanos for sharing him a little bit with his many devoted patients. -Patricia and Leili.

Leo was a wonderful person. We met in high school and were friends and band mates in Poor Paul for many years. I still have the 1969 Fender Jazz Bass bass guitar shown in the photo that Leo played. We were in each other's weddings. Although we didn't see each other for some time since, I frequently thought of Leo and Cheryl as they were such a big part of our lives at that time. Rest in peace my friend

My Facebook Post
I am so sorry to say that the person who first introduced me to Chris Gleason, my Daddy's Junky Music partner of 38 years, my dentist, Leo Lauretano, DMD, passed away on October 30. I met Leo in the summer of 1972, pre-Daddy's, when he was the guitar player for Gunga and the Dins, an oldies band performing at the 400 Lounge on Route 97.
I was a Din groupie! My brother Joe told me about the band. I was planning on opening Daddy's in September and would go to nightclubs to introduce myself to bands to see if I could start a business relationship. I didn't meet Chris until the next summer, 1973. The band was breaking up. We hit it off. After knowing him for about a month, stupid me, I asked him if he wanted to come into business with me. Like a dope, he said yes. But, despite our ignorance, the relationship worked. and for pretty much that entire time, Leo was Bette And my dentist.
Leo was always a healthy and happy guy. He did dentistry by day and played in oldies bands on weekends. I will miss you forever, Leo.
