Leo Lovick Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sietsema Funeral Home - Ackley on Mar. 22, 2022.
Leo Lovick, 96, of Ackley, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2022 at Grand JiVante in Ackley. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at St. John's U.C.C. in Ackley with burial in the West Friesland Cemetery. Visitation will be an hour before the service. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.
Leo was born on August 13 thierr, 1925, on a farm near Forest City, Iowa. He was one of twelve children born to Henry and Ida (Hansen) Lovick. He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings; James, Paul, Ardie, Larry, Murlette Hagen, Amy Brakke, Irene Brakke, Elaine Ollenburg, Pearl Hanna and Alice Toresdahl. He was baptized by Rev. Granskou at the Bethel Lutheran Church and was confirmed at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, Iowa by Rev. H D Oakland. He attended country school at Mt. Valley School #6 and then high school at Fertile, Iowa.
Leo farmed with his brothers and later moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for Bertelli and Sons Construction. It was in Cedar Rapids that he met Marlys, and they were married on October 8, 1966, in Ackley at St. John's U.C.C. where they have remained members. They moved home to Ackley in 1968 and began farming. He will be remembered for loving to farm, working with cattle and raising hogs in the A-houses.
Leo enjoyed his large family of 12 siblings. It was a great time getting together for holidays and playing lots of cards. The families grew so much that they no longer could have Christmas at his folks' house in the country and had to rent a hall in Garner for the Christmas party. He retired from farming in 1992, and then he and Marlys started going to Texas for the winter. He had three sisters that lived in the park they went to, so again a good time was had. He enjoyed it when nieces and nephews came down to the valley for a visit. Leo and Marlys went to Texas until 2015. Even though Leo's health confined him to home in the winter, he always enjoyed having company and was in good spirits -- happy to sit, watch ball games, read and visit.
Leo is survived by his wife Marlys, sister Doris Bonnstetter of Chapin, South Carolina, 16 nieces, 12 nephews, many great-nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Diane Lovick.
He was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law Don Brakke, Gilman Hagen, Harvey Brakke, Raymond Hanna, Gordon Toresdahl, Bob Ollenburg and Frank Bonnstetter, sisters-in-law Alvera Lovick, Gladys Lovick and Juanita Lovick.
