Leo J. Mahoney, 76, of Eldorado, Illinois, passed away on October 25, 2025, in Evansville, Indiana.
Born on February 24, 1949, in Eldorado, IL to the late Lawrence and Margaret (Basinger) Mahoney. Leo was a lifelong resident of his hometown. He graduated from Eldorado High School in 1967 and went on to build a proud career as a union ironworker with Ironworkers Local 103 in Evansville, Indiana, where he worked until his retirement. Leo took great pride in his craft and in the lasting friendships he made throughout his years in the trade.
Outside of work, Leo loved spending time on Saline County Golf Course. Golf was more than a pastime for him-it was where he found peace, laughter, and camaraderie with friends and family. Prior to Leo's love of golf, was his love of the Ohio River, the friends that he made there, and the times that they had. He was truly a "river rat". Leo was also a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary at Post 3479 in Eldorado, IL, where he enjoyed his time with friends and family while not on the golf course.
Leo is survived by his wife, Barb Mahoney(Fearheiley); children, Ryan Mahoney of Eldorado, IL, and Julie Beth Mahoney of Eldorado, IL; stepdaughter, Brittany Heavener(Grubbs) of Harrisburg, IL; and stepson, Jamie Grubbs of Galatia, IL. He also lieaves behind three beloved grandchildren: Adelynn Mahoney, Matthew Wood and Delilah Wood of Eldorado, IL; his brother, Bob Mahoney(Vurble Keelin) of Owensboro, KY; and sister-in-law Jane (Lavender) Mahoney of Wadesville, IN; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. With special thanks to, Kelli Mahoney of Eldorado, who he would not have known what to do without.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Larry Mahoney of Wadesville, IN, John(Barbara Meyers) Mahoney, and Chuck(Sharon Davis) Mahoney of Eldorado.
Leo will be remembered for his hard work, his love of family and friends, and his easygoing spirit that made everyone around him feel at home.
In lieu of a funeral service, there will be a celebration of life gathering and feed at the Eldorado VFW Post 3479 on December, 13 2025.
