Leo Young , A former resident of Altus Oklahoma passed away January 14, 2026. He was 91 years old and five days.
Leo Young, who entered this world on January 9, 1935, in
Soper, Oklahoma, as the eldest son of Cleo Young and Rosie "Sims" Young. He departed it having lived fully, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Raised in Soper, Hugo, and Paris, Leo learned the values of hard work and stewardship early, laboring alongside his father on the farm. He first married Mae Etta Young, and they were blessed with a daughter, Mae Young. In 1958, he answered the call of duty, serving honorably in the United States Army. It was while stationed in Arizona that he met his soulmate, Louella Marie Lyons. Together they built a beautiful life anchored in faith and family, raising twelve children: Leonia Nourse; Franklin Young; Roszelda Swan Lloyd and Karen Young; Myrtle Butler; Leo Lynn Young; Ramona Young, Lisa and Carl Gould; Gerald and Tonya Young; Dalton and Bernita Young; Kenneth Young (deceased); and Jennifer and Carlos Moore.
For years, Leo and Louella farmed the land in the Altus countryside and later in Snyder, Oklahoma. A proud Free Mason and a quintessential jack of all trades, Leo was known for his uniform of coveralls, jeans, and cowboy boots, his trusted pickup truck, and his ever present tools. He possessed a rare gift for fixing anything and a generous heart that never hesitated to help a neighbor in need.
As a father, he was ever present and devoted. He filled his children's lives with support at ball games, trips to drive in movies and amusement parks, and countless fishing excursions with Louella. After his farming years, he worked at the Goodyear Tire Plant in Wynnewood and later as a janitor for the City of Altus. Following Louella's passing in 1993, he helped lovingly raise several of his grandchildren.
In his later years, Leo moved to Muskogee, where he deepened his faith at Timothy First Baptist Church, studying the Holy Bible and being baptized by Pastor Kelly Payne. A subsequent move to Oklahoma City saw him enjoying his favorite westerns, like Little House on the Prairie, and the warmth of family gatherings.
Leo was a friend to all, known for his easy conversation and his habit of pulling over to aid strangers. He affectionately called his daughters his "baby dolls" and was the unwavering provider and protector of his family. Under his "umbrella," you were safe, loved, and always came first. He imparted practical skills, from farming and fishing to carpentry and mechanics, instilling a legacy of self sufficiency, strong morals, and discipline.
He found solace by the water with a fishing rod in hand, and his greatest pride was his family, including his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom he adored. His warm smile shone brightest when offered Spearmint gum, Juicy Fruit gum, or a package of his favorite yellow and brown cookies. He loved the color brown, the beauty of a rose, and held a profound, abiding relationship with God. True to his character, he often quipped with a smile that he would like to take his lawnmower with him, a testament to his hardworking nature, humility, and gentle humor.
Mr. Leo Young leaves behind a powerful legacy of love, faith, service, and strength. His lessons, his laughter, and his protective love will continue to guide and inspire the generations that follow.
He is reunited in eternal peace with his beloved wife, Louella Marie Lyons Young; his son, Kenneth Lydell Young; his grandson, Kenneth Lydell Lynn Young; his granddaughter, Sasha Dickey; his great granddaughter, Octavia Dickey; and his great great granddaughter, Dream Carrington. He also joins his siblings: Altheda Lee, Marilyn Horton, Ira C. Young, Linda Bagley, and Michael Young.
