Leon "Lee" DeGraaf, born on July 22, 1955, in
Port Jefferson, NY, passed away peacefully at home in
Hubert, NC, on December 31, 2025, at the age of 70. Lee's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to family, his work, and his community.
Lee spent much of his early years in Long Island, New York and he worked with North Sea in Southampton, New York, for six years. It was during this time that he honed his skills and developed a passion for craftsmanship. He later pursued his entrepreneurial spirit by establishing his own painting business, L&M Painting, where he left an indelible mark with his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality. His work was not just a job but a testament to his integrity and pride in a job well done.
An avid fisherman, Lee found solace and joy on the water, spending many cherished hours on his beloved boat. His love for nature extended beyond the sea; he took great pleasure in yard work and was known as a capable handyman who could fix anything. His dedication to maintaining and beautifying both his home and those of his neighbors was unparalleled.
Lee was a man who welcomed others with open arms and a warm smile, earning him the affectionate title of "The Mayor of Hubert." His generosity knew no bounds-whether it was helping new neighbors settle in or mowing their lawns until they were able to do so themselves, Lee was always there, embodying the true spirit of community. His sense of humor and outgoing nature brightened the lives of all who knew him, and his steadfast belief in doing things the right way set an example for others to follow.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward DeGraaf and Ruth (Howell) DeGraaf. Lee is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Tina Kempf DeGraaf, his cherished daughter, Shannon DeGraaf of New York, and the one who called "Pop Pop, his beloved grandson, Maverick Forsberg. He leaves behind a legacy of love with his brothers Edward, John, Ray, and Charles, all residing in New York; his nephews, Martin Forsberg, III and Shawn Forsberg; as well as his great-nephews, Martin Forsberg, IV and Mason Forsberg.
Services to honor Lee's life and memory will be held at a later date. As we celebrate Lee's life, let us remember him for his kind heart, his welcoming spirit, and his unwavering commitment to those he loved. In every project he undertook and every person he greeted, Lee taught us that true success lies in the relationships we build and the kindness we extend to others.
May he rest in peace, forever remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege to know him.
