Leon "Poodle" Hayes, 84, of Knobley Road, Keyser, WV, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 12, 2023 while under the care of WVU Medicine Hospice.
Born on May 18, 1939 in Keyser, WV, he was a son of the late Rollie R. and Lena C. (Urice) Hayes. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Erman "Hoppy" Hayes, Donald "Tip" Hayes and Ervin "Bunk" Hayes and a sister, Madeline "Sis" Jones.
Mr. Hayes was a 1957 graduate of Keyser High School and was employed for 21 years with the West Virginia Department of Highways as a utility inspector. He was a faithful member of the Mt. Zion Church, Knobley Road, where he formerly served as Sunday school superintendent, head deacon and sound technician.
Surviving is his wife of nearly 60 years, Joan (Leydig) Hayes; his daughters, Crystal Proietti and husband Tim and Candy Keller and husband Bill, all of Keyser; four grandchildren, Chris Proietti and wife Laci, Cory Proietti and wife Kiri, Emily Pancake and husband Cody and Holly Haines and husband Deric; two great grandchildren, Raegan Proietti and Audrey Pancake and one great grandson "on the way." Also surviving are several nieces and nephews which include Kim and Doug Rinard of Keyser.
Friends will be received at the Mt. Zion Church, Knobley Road, on Thursday, August 17, 2023 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Mt. Zion Church on Friday, August 18, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jerry Eisenhour officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Biser Cemetery, Knobley Road, Keyser.
The Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to WVU Medicine Hospice, 1952 New Creek Highway, Keyser, WV 26726.
