Leon Johnson, age 86, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, in Jackson, Mississippi. Born on January 1, 1939, in Braxton, Mississippi, he was the beloved son of the late Mary Alice and Alf Johnson.
Leon proudly served his country in the United States military, concluding his service with an honorable discharge. Following his military career, he pursued higher education at Jackson State University, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. This academic achievement opened the door to a meaningful career in education, where Leon dedicated himself to working with special needs students and later as a counselor. Leon retired from the Jackson Public School District in 1995. His compassion and commitment left a lasting impact on the lives of those he taught-students who deeply loved and respected him.
Leon united in marriage to Marcheta Johnson, who preceded him in death.
Among his cherished routines were his daily calls to his sister, Ethel Mosby, who also preceded him in death, his daily morning breakfast at McDonald’s with a group of his friends, and everything dealing with sports, especially the Jackson State Tigers.
Leon leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom. He is survived by his daughter, Chandra Lewis; his son, Reginald (Gwendolyn) Blackman; his grandchildren, Shondrae Lewis and Justin Blackman; his niece, Brenda Brown; great-grandnephews, Demell A. Mitchell and A'jaaz D. Mitchell; great-grandniece, Aijai'aree Mitchell; and partner Gladys Jones, her daughter, Deirdre Walker and her daughter, Akierah Walker. He is also remembered fondly by a host of other relatives and friends whose lives he touched.
Leon will be remembered for his gentle spirit, witty sense of humor, unwavering dedication to education, and the deep connections he nurtured through his life. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
